Pompeii and Vesuvius tour: what the volcano part really is

20 tours, a median of 166.5 EUR and 8 hours. The Park's own page now ends the trail at 1,170 m, sells the ticket by 10-minute slot and closes it for orange alerts.

Nineteen of the 20 tours on this page mention Vesuvius, and all five listings we opened still describe a walk to a crater, a summit or a peak. The Parco Nazionale del Vesuvio says something else on its own page, read on 4 November 2026: the full ring is closed, the summit path is closed, and the trail ends at the Capannuccia, 1,170 metres up. The ticket is sold online only, in ten-minute slots. The Vesuvius half of a Pompeii and Vesuvius tour is the part that changes: its ticket, its trail and its closures follow the Park's page, not the listing. The rules of Pompeii itself are on the Pompeii page and are not repeated here.

The 20 tours are 17 listings on Viator, two on Tiqets and one on Civitatis, read on 4 November 2026. They hold 13,678 reviews at a weighted 4.43, the lowest score of the eight Pompeii formats. The scores cannot say whether the cause is the city, the bus or the mountain. Of the 20, 60% list an entrance ticket as included, 60% offer a pickup, half name an archaeologist as the guide, and 35% include lunch.

Four practical terms from the Park's page, read on 4 November 2026, apply to every listing. Entry is allowed from 120 minutes before the slot to 120 minutes after it, or from 30 minutes before to 15 after for a last-minute ticket. The trail starts at the Quota 1000 square, where parking is forbidden and the public toilets are temporarily out of use. A refund for a neighbouring slot has to be claimed within 30 days, and the Park says it pays within 60. Reduced fares go to under-25s and residents of the 13 municipalities of the Park, and children under six enter free with an adult.

For the volcano, check the Park's page before booking: the ticket and the trail follow the weather. For Pompeii alone, the guided tours at the site are the better start.

What the Vesuvius ticket is

The Gran Cono trail belongs to the Parco Nazionale del Vesuvio, and the Park sells its ticket in one place: vesuviopark.vivaticket.it, online, with no ticket office on the mountain. A slot lasts ten minutes and holds 50 tickets, on sale about a month ahead. Ten more per slot are released as last-minute tickets, 30 minutes before, from the Wi-Fi near the gate. Last-minute tickets have carried a name since 11 April 2026. The price is where the Park contradicts itself. The fares section says 10 EUR full and 8 reduced, while a banner on the same page says 11.68 and 9.55. One listing we opened splits its figure into 10 EUR plus a 1.68 EUR reservation fee, which would explain the banner, but the Park does not say so. Plan on 10 to 12 EUR.

Above 1,000 metres the Park's own guide, from the Presidio Permanente Vulcano Vesuvio, walks with the group from start to finish. Regional tourist, volcanological and alpine guides enter free only in the exercise of their profession, so a private guide does not replace the Park's.

"Diffidare di altri rivenditori non autorizzati!" (Beware of other, unauthorised resellers.) The Park's page, about anyone selling its ticket other than Vivaticket.

Buy it there, or confirm that your operator has.

The inner wall and floor of the crater of Mount Vesuvius

What the older listings promise

Most descriptions of the climb still sell the top of the volcano, and the picture is the one they use: the inner wall of the crater in bands of lapilli, over a floor of loose debris. The Park's page now says the summit path on the north and east sides is closed for safety and environmental protection, and that the walk aims for the Capannuccia at 1,170 m, against 1,281 m for the top of the cone. The page's description also mentions viewpoints along the route onto the crater's interior, and does not say whether the shortened trail still reaches them. Treat any promise of a crater view as unconfirmed.

What five listings promise

We opened five of the 20 listings, across the departures and the price range, and set their wording next to the Park's. It is a sample, and a guide may do something other than the listing says.

Five listings opened on 4 November 2026, in the operators' own words, set against the Park's rule.
Listing How it describes Vesuvius Park ticket If the Park closes
Day tour from Rome, Vesuvius optional, from 56 EURA crater hike of about 20 minutes, or a geologist-guided walk10 EUR plus a 1.68 EUR reservation fee, only with the Vesuvius optionCrater trails may be closed November to March; the itinerary is adjusted
Day tour from Naples with pizza lunch, 130 EURA hike to a summit at 1,200 m, with a look into the craterIncluded, 11 EURThe Park entrance is refunded
Day trip from Naples, Civitatis, 125 EURAn ascent, with views from the peak and Park guidesIncluded, 11.68 EURNothing stated
Private day with Pompeii, Vesuvius and wine, 399 EURA path to the top of the craterListed as not includedNothing stated
Pompeii, Vesuvius, lunch and wine from the Amalfi Coast, 249 EURStarts at 1,000 m on the Gran Cono path, which leads to the craterIncluded, as an entry ticket for Pompeii and VesuviusNothing stated

All five promise the top of the volcano. Two mention a closure: one says the crater trails may shut and the itinerary changes, the other refunds the Park entrance. One lists the Park as not included, which presumably leaves you to find a named slot on Vivaticket yourself. Ask before you book whether your listing includes the slot or leaves it to you.

What the Park asks of tour operators

The Park has had its own rules for operators since 20 July 2026, which we read on its page on 4 November 2026. Only agencies licensed under the activity codes for travel agencies and tour operators may sell the ticket in a package. Of the 60 tickets in each ten-minute slot, 25 are held for them, and one operator can take at most 80 tickets for a date.

A package that sells the Vesuvius trail has to show what the crater ticket costs.

Three of the five listings we opened show the Park fee in euros. The 399 EUR private day lists it as not included, and the 249 EUR coast day names it only as an entry ticket for Pompeii and Vesuvius. A missing figure is a reason to ask the operator, not a finding against it, because the price may sit on a page we did not open.

Where the trail ends and what closes it

Gran Cono rules as the Park's page states them on 4 November 2026.
Rule What the page says What it means for a tour
Route4,010 m there and back, low difficulty; the full ring is closed; the summit path is closedThe walk ends at the Capannuccia, 1,170 m
TimeThe page says about 2.5 hours in one place and a maximum of 2 in anotherAllow 2.5 hours on the trail
WeatherAutomatic closure from a regional orange alertA tour can be cut on the day
RefundAutomatic for closures logged by the guides; for neighbouring slots, a claim within 30 daysRead what your operator refunds, not what the Park does

In autumn a closure is not an exception. The Park's home page, which carries no date, lists the Gran Cono closed for an orange alert on 8 to 10 October and again on 21 October, trail no. 4 closed on 10 October and a closure for the Cicloscalata del Vesuvio cycling race on 25 October.

Mount Vesuvius rising above the ruined walls and trees of Pompeii

Pompeii first, Vesuvius after lunch

Every listing we opened runs the day in the same order: the city for two hours, lunch, then the volcano, which stands above the ruined walls and trees in the photograph. The order has a cost in winter. One Naples listing gives a 10:20 pickup, a 30-minute drive, a two-hour walk through Pompeii, lunch, and a 40-minute coach ride to the Park. With an hour for lunch that is 14:30 at the gate, and the last access from November to February is 15:00. This is our sum from the listing, not an operator's schedule, but it shows how little room a short day leaves.

Four dates for the volcano

From the Park's own history of Vesuvius. The day of the 79 eruption is disputed, so only the year is given.

The origins

  1. 79 AD

Pompeii, Herculaneum and Stabiae are buried

The Park gives 24 August, a date that is argued over. The year is not.

The growth

  1. 16 December 1631

    Lava reaches the sea

A violent eruption opens a phase of persistent activity that lasts until 1944. Estimates of the dead run from a few thousand to far more, so no figure is given.

  2. 17 to 23 March 1944

    The last eruption

Villages including San Sebastiano al Vesuvio are destroyed. Since then the Park describes the volcano as at active rest.

Today

  1. 5 June 1995

    The Park is established

The Parco Nazionale del Vesuvio is created to protect the cone and its slopes.

What the day costs, by where it starts

Chart of the prices of the 20 tours behind the Pompeii + Vesuvius page on pompeii.museum, median 166.5 EUR
Prices of the 20 tours in EUR. Thirteen shared or small-group tours sit between 56 and 249; the seven private ones run from 344 to 625. · Pompeii Museum Editorial, from the prices of the tours listed on this site

The 166.5 EUR median sits between two groups. The 13 shared tours have a median of 125 EUR, and nine of them cost between 85 and 134. The seven private ones, all priced per person, have a median of 451 EUR. Six listings include a wine tasting or a winery lunch, and five of those six are private. The Park assigns the guide for the trail, so a private tour adds a vehicle and a Pompeii guide.

The coast rows are high because four of those eight are private. The four shared ones cost 125 to 249, median 204, against 115 from Naples. From Rome, the Rome page reads the 12-hour days in full, and the Naples and Sorrento page does the same for the shorter ones.

How to choose one

If the volcano is the reason you are here, pick a listing that names the Park ticket and its price, says what happens when the Park closes, and gives the Vesuvius walk its own time. If Pompeii is the reason, the Vesuvius half adds a walk of about 2.5 hours that the Park can cancel on the day, and a guide at the site costs a median 50 EUR. We would not pay 400 EUR or more for a private day on account of the mountain. If the Park shuts, a private car at least lets you swap Vesuvius for something else, but ask in advance, because none of the listings we opened says it will.

Questions about Pompeii and Vesuvius tours

Do I need to buy the Vesuvius ticket myself?

It depends on the listing. Of the five we opened, three include the Park ticket, one sells it only with an optional Vesuvius add-on and one lists it as not included. Where it is not, you need a named slot on vesuviopark.vivaticket.it, the only seller the Park authorises.

Is the crater part of the walk?

The Park's page, read on 4 November 2026, says the summit path is closed and the trail ends at the Capannuccia, 1,170 m. Several listings still say crater or summit. Its description mentions viewpoints along the route onto the crater's interior but not whether the shortened trail still reaches them, so treat the promise as unconfirmed.

What happens if the Park closes?

The Park closes the trail automatically from a regional orange alert and refunds closures its guides log. A tour operator's refund is separate. One listing refunds the Park entrance, one adjusts the itinerary, three say nothing. A listing's free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead does not cover a closure on the day.

Can I do Pompeii and Vesuvius on my own in one day?

In summer, yes, if you start early. In winter it is tight. Last access to the Gran Cono is 15:00 from November to February and Pompeii's last entry is 15:30. Our sum, with two hours at Pompeii, up to 2.5 on the trail and 30 to 60 minutes between them, is 5 to 5.5 hours without lunch.

Is the climb worth it?

Opinions are split. In the forum posts we read that mention it, four of seven are lukewarm. The effort is small, 4 km at low difficulty. The doubt is the view, and a closure on the day.

Data verified on . Park rules from parconazionaledelvesuvio.it, 4 Nov 2026; five of 20 listings opened; prices and lengths from the 20 tours read the same day.
