Pompeii tours: how the site works and which format to book

Named tickets and 20,000 entries a day, what is open on 4 November 2026, and 140 tours in eight formats with a median price of 128.3 EUR.

Since 15 November 2024 a ticket to Pompeii carries your name, a day and a time slot, and the park lets in no more than 20,000 people a day. A tour that leaves the ticket out leaves you to buy half the day yourself. Below it sit 140 Pompeii tours, split into eight formats with a median price of 128.3 EUR, each with a page of its own. For the choice between Pompeii and the other Roman sites, the Italy page does the comparing.

The 140 tours are the distinct listings across the eight formats, since some appear in two, read on 4 November 2026 from Viator (124), Tiqets (8) and Civitatis (8). Of the 140, 31% are private, 36% touch the Amalfi Coast, 17% include Vesuvius and 15% include Herculaneum. Prices are as listed, mostly per person. Ticket prices, rules and closures come from the Parco Archeologico di Pompei's own pages, read the same day. Rules at Pompeii change often. Free-admission days, such as the first Sunday of the month or 4 November 2026, work differently from everything below, and the first section says how. Operators are counted, not ranked: the largest holds 19% of the reviews.

Read the access rules before the tours: the ticket carries a name and a time slot, so a late booking can change what you get. Winter changes the day as well: from 15 October to 15 March the last entry is 15:30 and the park closes at 17:00, against 17:30 and 19:00 in summer. The Antiquarium is partly closed from 4 to 22 November and closed altogether from 23 November to 7 December, so a November visit has no museum to fall back on. Three tickets have existed since 12 January 2026: the 20 EUR Express covers the ancient city only, the 25 EUR Pompeii+ adds the suburban villas, Villa Regina and the Boscoreale antiquarium, and the 30 EUR three-day ticket also opens Oplontis and the Stabiae sites, so what a tour includes often comes down to which of the three it buys for you.

Pompeii tickets: named, capped and sold by slot

Every ticket shows a name, a day and a time slot, the document is checked at the gate, and the ticket cannot be passed on or changed. A name that does not match means no entry and no refund. The cap is 20,000 entries a day. From 16 March to 14 October it is split into 15,000 places for 9:00 to 13:00 and 5,000 for 13:01 to 17:30, and from 15 October to 15 March the two slots run 9:00 to 13:00 and 13:01 to 15:30. One ticket is one entry: there is no leaving and coming back.

Pompeii tickets since 12 January 2026, read on the park's own site. Reduced 2 EUR for EU citizens from 18 up to 25, and for some non-EU residents of Italy.

The park's official online seller is Vivaticket. On the first Sunday of the month, and on other free days, the rules flip: you cannot book, nobody asks for a name, you go straight to the turnstiles, and the cap of 20,000 still applies. On 4 May 2025 it was reached and entries were stopped for hours, according to The Art Newspaper. A free day is the one day on which buying an entry ticket from anyone makes no sense.

The portico of the Sanctuary of Apollo with the bronze Apollo statue, Pompeii

A town that ran from its forum

The Sanctuary of Apollo is one of the buildings that frame the forum, together with the Basilica and the Temple of Jupiter; its portico is the one in the picture. The forum was where the town's religion, law and trade met. Around it stood streets, houses, baths and an amphitheater.

Wikipedia puts the population at 10,000 to 20,000 and the burial at 4 to 6 meters of ash and pumice. After the siege of Sulla in 89 BC the town became a Roman colony, and the amphitheater, built around 70 BC, is among the oldest in stone.

The park is four sites, and Herculaneum is not one of them

The Parco Archeologico di Pompei runs Pompeii, Oplontis, Boscoreale and Stabiae. Herculaneum has its own park, its own ticket and its own rules, which is why no Pompeii ticket gets you in. The map shows Pompeii, Oplontis and Stabiae of the park, Herculaneum outside it, and Naples and Sorrento as the two places most tours start from.

Map: Pompeii and its neighbours on the Bay of Naples

The gates matter more than the map. Porta Marina and Piazza Esedra are reached from the Pompei Scavi-Villa dei Misteri stop of the Circumvesuviana. Piazza Anfiteatro is reached from Pompei Santuario and is the entrance for the 'Pompeii for all' route for visitors with reduced mobility. Ticket offices exist only at these gates, inside the area.

The houses rotate. Since 15 August the park lists as open the Houses of Menander, of Octavius Quartio, of the Tragic Poet and of Pansa, and the Fullonica of Stephanus; as closed the Houses of the Ceii, of the Lararium of Achilles and of the Silver Wedding, and the Praedia of Julia Felix; and the 'house of the day' is gone. But the winter list still shows two of those closed ones as open. Two official pages disagree, so check before planning around one house.

The Basilica of Pompeii seen across the forum with its column bases

Start at the forum, not at the gate

From across the forum, the column bases in the picture are the Basilica. It is the best first stop, since almost everything else is close. In a straight line, using coordinates from Wikidata, the Lupanare is 190 m from the forum, the Stabian Baths 240 m, the House of the Faun 200 m and the Villa of the Mysteries 780 m. The amphitheater is 880 m away. The whole city is small; most of the time goes in looking.

Two routes: three hours and five to six

The park publishes no visit time. Its only measure is the 1.5 hour themed visit, so these are our planning budgets, not official durations. The 5 to 6 hour route must start with the 9:00 slot: begun at 13:01 in winter, it runs into the 17:00 closing.

Planning budgets, not official times. Distances are straight-line, from Wikidata coordinates.

The two ends of route B are about 1.5 km apart in a straight line, so budget for the walk between them. Both leave out the Antiquarium, partly closed from 4 to 22 November and closed from 23 November to 7 December.

Ten dates from settlement to named tickets

From Wikipedia's entries on Pompeii and its amphitheater and from the park's own notices. The day of the eruption is disputed, so only the year is given.

The origins

  1. 8th c. BC

    First settlements

Oscan villages appear; the walled town is dated to the 7th to 6th centuries BC.

  2. 89 BC

    Sulla's siege

Pompeii is besieged in the Social War and then becomes a Roman colony.

  3. c. 70 BC

    The amphitheater

One of the oldest stone amphitheaters is built.

  4. 79 AD

    Vesuvius

The eruption buries the town. The traditional day, 24 August, is disputed.

The growth

    First digs

The city is not yet identified; that happens on 20 August 1763.

  2. 1863

    Fiorelli

Giuseppe Fiorelli takes over the digs and introduces plaster casts.

  3. 1997

    UNESCO

A 105 million EUR programme, decided by the EU on 29 March.

  2. 15 Nov 2024

    Named tickets

    The 20,000 daily cap begins.

  3. 12 Mar 2026

    The casts

A permanent show of 22 casts opens in the Great Palestra.

Heat and crowds

In the park's own counts for Pompeii and its three satellites, April 2025 had 522,046 entries, August 398,476 and January 133,788. The Naples airport station, 25 km away, averages highs of 31.0 C in August with a record of 40.0. The park has issued heat advice but, as far as we found, no rule that closes the site.

The cool hours and the crowded hours are the same hours.

The morning slot is the cooler one and the one that holds 15,000 people. The Italy page sets Pompeii against the other sites.

Eight ways to book Pompeii

One name, eight different days: each dot is the median of one format and each bar the middle half of its listings. Eight pages of 20 tours make 160, but only 140 are distinct, so 20 listings sit under two formats.

Private230.6 EUR2.2 hGroup or per person pricing

A private guide of 2.2 hours costs 230.6 EUR, nearly twice the 12 hour day from Rome, so length is not what sets the price. What moves it is who handles the transfer and what the price includes. The two longest formats, from Rome and with the Amalfi Coast, sit at 122.9 and 130 EUR, and the 12 and 10 hours at the median are mostly time on the road. The cheapest, a guide at the site, is 50 EUR for about two hours. For half a day from the bay, from Naples and Sorrento is 75.3 EUR. Herculaneum, Vesuvius, a cruise call and a private guide each add a cost on top.

Audio guides, official visits and what you cannot bring

Audio guides are allowed only if the park rents them: 9 EUR for one, 14 EUR for two, 7.50 EUR from the third, collected at Porta Marina, Piazza Esedra or Porta Anfiteatro against an identity document. The rules ban any other audio guide and say nothing about phone apps. Since 2 March 2026 the park also runs a 1.5 hour themed visit for 8 EUR plus the ticket, free under 10, starting at Porta Marina Superiore or Piazza Anfiteatro.

Luggage and bags above 30 x 30 x 15 cm are not allowed in; a deposit exists at Porta Marina and Piazza Anfiteatro, and the park does not say what it costs. Organized groups need a ticket in a tour operator's name: at least 5 people, at most 35, with headsets above 15.

On who may guide, our reading of the national law of 2023 (Law 190/2023) is that guiding requires registration on the national guides' list, and that a tour operator must give the guide's registration number. The guided tours page explains what an archaeologist, a licensed guide and an audio guide are, and what the price includes.

Questions about visiting Pompeii

Do I need to book Pompeii in advance?

Yes, except on free days. The ticket is named and tied to a slot, and the day is capped at 20,000. In April and May the morning slot is the one to book first. On free days there is no booking at all, and the press reports queues of 45 minutes or more.

How long do I need at Pompeii?

The park publishes no figure. Its themed visit lasts 1.5 hours. Our planning budgets are about three hours for a short route and five to six for a full one. Blogs say three to four hours; that is an estimate without a source.

Is it worth going if I have only half a day?

Yes, with route A. The forum, the baths and the two big houses are within about 250 m of each other, and three hours is enough to see them. Go in the morning slot and skip the amphitheater and the Villa of the Mysteries.
