Naples underground and archaeological museum tours: five visits

Tunnels and catacombs at 8 to 19 EUR, the MANN at 20 EUR, and the closing days and closed rooms that decide which one you can do.

Of the 20 tours on this page, 11 go under Naples, into tunnels, cisterns and catacombs, and 9 go into the National Archaeological Museum, the MANN. The underground visits cost 8 to 19 EUR in the catalogue and the museum tours 24 to 250 EUR: two products at opposite ends of the price chart, about 600 meters apart in a straight line (Napoli Sotterranea to the MANN, from published coordinates). The comparison of Naples with Pompeii and Herculaneum is on the Italy page.

The 20 tours were read on 4 November 2026: 9 on Viator, 8 on Tiqets and 3 on Civitatis. The eleven underground and catacomb listings hold 96% of the 19,674 reviews, and the nine museum listings only 845, so the rating of 4.64 is mostly a rating of the tunnels, not of the museum. Official prices, hours and closures come from each site's own pages, read the same day. Several of those pages carry no update date, and we say so where it matters. We opened four listings in full to see what their prices include. The largest operator, a retailer's skip-the-line ticket for the underground, holds 38% of the reviews.

The five visits are Napoli Sotterranea, the Spanish Quarters tunnels, the Galleria Borbonica, the catacombs of San Gennaro and San Gaudioso, and the MANN. Only the catacombs and the museum publish a price on their own pages; for the three tunnel visits the price is the retailers' figure or unknown. If you are also going to Pompeii, the Pompeii page holds the rules for the ruins; this page is about what lies under the city and inside the museum.

The word underground covers three different operators here, and the catacombs are a fourth. The table keeps them apart. Where an official page publishes no price, the retailer price is marked as such.

Napoli Sotterranea and the catacombs are separate visits with separate operators. In a straight line from Piazza San Gaetano it is about 1.7 km to the San Gennaro catacombs and about 1.2 km to San Gaudioso; these are straight lines calculated from published coordinates, not walking times. The MANN is about 0.6 km from the square on the same basis. The operator warns that Google Maps points to a wrong destination for Napoli Sotterranea, and the address is number 69, although several listings write 68.

Panorama of the historic centre of Naples with the Gulf of Naples and Vesuvius behind

The old center

Why a cave system and a museum share a page

Under the roofs of the old center lies the tuff the Greeks cut to build Neapolis, according to the Napoli Sotterranea association; the panorama shows those roofs with the gulf and Vesuvius behind. Under Augustus, galleries carried water from the Serino, about 70 km away, and in the Second World War the same galleries sheltered people from air raids.

The museum is about 600 meters away in a straight line. The association says its visit reaches about 40 meters down.

Naples archaeological museum tours: what is open and what is not

The MANN is the other half of Pompeii. The Pompeii page explains the site; many finds from the Vesuvian towns are shown here, including a section on the Villa of the Papyri at Herculaneum. The building dates from 1585 and was first a cavalry barracks. The University used it from 1616 to 1777, and the museum was founded in 1777. It was the Real Museo Borbonico from 1816 to 1861. It counted 532,985 visitors in 2024 (Ministry of Culture), which put it 15th in Italy.

The Mosaic of Alexander is not on display, but two observation points let you watch the restorers at work.

The museum gives two versions of the closure. Its page of open rooms lists the mosaic section and the Secret Cabinet as closed from 21 September to 30 November 2026, with the hours valid until 30 November. The banner on its home page says both are closed until further notice. We read both on 4 November 2026 and the end date is not clear, so check before you travel. The Mosaic of Alexander, from the Casa del Fauno in Pompeii, is in an extraordinary restoration. Open every day are the Egyptian collection, the Farnese sculptures and gems, Roman Campania, the Domus, the frescoes, the Temple of Isis and the model of Pompeii. The museum's own Villa of the Papyri section is open daily from 10:00 to 18:20; it is not the villa at Herculaneum, which is closed. On free days the Egyptian collection and the Magna Grecia section close too, and the Magna Grecia and Prehistory floors alternate between morning and afternoon openings. The museum lists whole sections, not single works, so do not build a visit around one object.

Statue of Artemis of Ephesus in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples

The Farnese collection

A statue covered in ornaments, and two Farnese works that are not one

The polychrome statue in the picture is the Artemis of Ephesus, with the chest covered in ornaments, from the Farnese collection that forms the core of the museum. The Farnese Bull is a colossal marble group. The Farnese Hercules is a different statue in the same collection.

The 50 EUR private tour in the catalogue promises the Farnese Hercules and shows the Bull in its pictures.

Catacombs and tunnels: the visits that need planning

The catacombs always need a booking. The operator runs one guided tour an hour, from 10:00 with the last entry at 17:00, in Italian and English, and closes on Wednesday and 25 December. The ticket is 13 EUR, the same as the retailer price, with 6 EUR under 18. The accessible entrance at Vicoletto San Gennaro dei Poveri 22 is temporarily closed for work on the tuff wall, so anyone who needs it should write to the operator first. A combined walk through San Gennaro and the Rione Sanità runs at 9:30 on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays for 19 EUR.

Napoli Sotterranea publishes no price. Its page lists departures at 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 in Italian and English; it writes the late slots as 16, 17 and 18, so confirm the last one when you book. A queue jump ticket is sold by the operator itself.

The operator's own booking page gives a queue of 10 to 90 minutes in busy periods.

We could not read the Galleria Borbonica's official page. What we have is a retailer price of 15 EUR and a 2015 press article with different prices, so treat its days and times as unknown.

Museum entry, guide or both: what the Naples tours include

Chart of the prices of the 20 tours behind the Naples archaeology page on pompeii.museum, median 19 EUR
18 of the 20 tours by length and price. Underground and catacomb visits sit at 8 to 19 EUR for under two hours; museum tours with a guide start at 44 EUR; privates reach 250. · Pompeii Museum Editorial, from the prices of the tours listed on this site

The middle half of the 20 tours runs from 17.20 EUR to 45.50 EUR, and the median is 19. All 5 private tours, 25% of the page, are museum tours, and all but one are priced per person: 50, 90, 162 and 169 EUR, with the fifth at 250 EUR for the group. A private museum tour at 169 EUR a head costs nearly four times the 44 EUR group tour of the same two hours. The two retailer listings with a "skip the line" label are 10% of the page, and for the underground the operator's own queue jump ticket is what the label means.

Choosing, in what order

If you have one afternoon, take the underground visit at 18 EUR or the museum, not both with a private guide. The underground is under cover and the museum is indoors all year. For Pompeii the most repeated forum advice, in six of the threads we read, is to see the museum before the site: you meet the objects first and the walls make more sense. That is opinion, but it is the most repeated advice in the six forum threads that mention the museum. A day with both is possible from Thursday to Monday, since Napoli Sotterranea, the MANN and San Gaudioso lie within about 1.2 km of each other in a straight line (San Gennaro is 1.7 km from the square). We have not checked the hours against each other, and the catacombs take their last tour at 17:00.

Book the town the museum's finds came from

The Pompeii page explains the ticket, the rules and the eight ways to book the town itself.

Questions about Naples underground and the museum

Is Napoli Sotterranea the same as the catacombs?
No. They are separate systems with separate operators, tickets and entrances. The catacombs of San Gennaro are about 1.7 km from Piazza San Gaetano and San Gaudioso about 1.2 km, both in a straight line.
Do I need to book the catacombs?
Yes. The operator's page says the visit is always guided and always booked, with one tour an hour from 10:00 and the last at 17:00. Closed on Wednesday and 25 December. The ticket is 13 EUR.
Is the MANN open on Tuesday?
No, it is closed on Tuesday. If a Tuesday is a public holiday it opens and closes the following day instead; in 2026 that meant opening on 2 June and 8 December and closing on 3 June and 9 December.
What is closed at the MANN?
The museum's page of open rooms lists the mosaic section and the Secret Cabinet as closed from 21 September to 30 November 2026, while its home banner says until further notice, so the end date is unclear. The Mosaic of Alexander is in restoration and not on display. The Villa of the Papyri section of the MANN is open daily, 10:00 to 18:20. On free days the Egyptian collection and the Magna Grecia section close too.
Should I see the museum before Pompeii?
Many visitors say yes, and it was the most repeated advice in the forum threads we read. You meet the objects first, ideally with a guide, then see the streets they came from.
