Pompeii After Dark: Evening Visits, Shows and Sunset

A regular ticket never reaches the evening. After hours, Pompeii opens only for dated programs. Here is what ran in past seasons, where the next one will be announced, and when the sun sets.

Can you visit Pompeii at night? Only on dates the Park announces. A regular ticket never reaches the evening: as of November 2026 the site closes at 19:00 from mid-March to mid-October and at 17:00 the rest of the year, with the last entry at 17:30 and 15:30. After that, the ruins reopen only for separate evening programs, mostly on Fridays and Saturdays between late June and early October. Each year's dates come out shortly before the season starts, so this page gives none in advance. It records what the Park ran in earlier years, so you know what to look for, and says where the next calendar will appear.

Treat every evening program as an event with a start and an end date. None of the dates on this page is a promise for a future summer.

What the Park ran after hours, season by season

The Park of Pompeii has opened its sites in the evening in most recent years, each time in a different shape. The table lists what we could confirm in the Park's own announcements. Ticket prices are left out on purpose; the evening price changed from year to year, and our tickets page is the only place on this site where we keep prices.

Read the 2026 autumn row twice. The route that started at Piazza Anfiteatro covered the casts exhibition and a few of the grander houses; the other went to the Villa of the Mysteries and, by free shuttle, to Villa Regina at Boscoreale. Neither was the Pompeii you see between 9:00 and 17:00. They were short, themed walks through selected spots.

What the pattern tells you, and what it does not

This is our reading of nine announcements, not a rule the Park has stated. Four things repeat.

  • Evenings are a summer habit with exceptions. Most seasons sit between late June and early October. October 2020 and December 2023 show the Park can also open at other times.
  • The routes are short. Nothing in the table lets you roam the whole city after dark. The route changes: the lit Forum in 2018 to 2022, the casts exhibition and a few houses in 2026, the suburban villas in 2023.
  • Entry is capped and timed. In 2022 the Park allowed 1,500 people, 500 per hour.
  • The announcement can come late. The Night of Museums release is dated 19 May for 23 May. The release for the July evenings is dated 26 June and lists dates from 25 June.

The last point matters most for planning. Do not book flights or hotels around an evening opening that has not been published. If you are in the Bay of Naples when one runs, treat it as a bonus.

Shows at the Large Theatre: Pompeii Theatrum Mundi

The Large Theatre (Teatro Grande, address VIII.7.20 in the city grid) was built in the middle of the 2nd century BC and restored under Augustus by the architect Marcus Artorius Primus, who is named in an inscription. Estimates put its capacity at about 5,000 spectators. Since 2018 it has hosted a summer drama season, Pompeii Theatrum Mundi.

The eighth edition ran from 20 June to 20 July 2025. It was organized by Teatro di Napoli, the national theater of Campania, with the Park. According to the press coverage we read, the four productions were Golem (directed by Amos Gitai, 20 and 21 June, 21:00), Notte Morricone (Marcos Morau, 4 and 5 July), Elettra by Sophocles (Roberto Andò, 11 to 13 July, 20:00) and Lysistrata by Aristophanes (Serena Sinigaglia, 18 to 20 July). The ninth edition ran from 18 June to 12 July 2026, according to ANSA and local press, with four productions. The program is announced each spring; we do not list future dates.

A theatre ticket is its own purchase. It does not turn into a visit to the ruins, and the show times in 2025 were in the evening, so the return trip is part of the plan (see below).

Concerts at the Amphitheatre

The Park describes the amphitheatre, II.6 in the city grid, as the place where Pink Floyd played a concert behind closed doors in 1971. Since 2024 it has run a modern concert season there. The second season, Pompei è Musica, had fourteen concerts between 27 June and 5 August 2025, opening with two nights by the tenor Andrea Bocelli, according to the Park's release of 18 April 2025. The 2025 line-up included the festival BOP, Beats of Pompeii, which returned in 2026 as its third edition: according to the art magazine Finestre sull'Arte, 20 concerts from 24 June to 27 July. The Park timed its summer evening openings to the same nights, and concert ticket holders could see the Palaestra exhibition before the show.

Evenings at Herculaneum: I Venerdì di Ercolano

Herculaneum has the most regular evening format in the area. The Park of Herculaneum says its evening openings began in 2018 and run each summer, in July and August. The 2026 edition, the ninth, carried the theme Love and War and put seven theater, dance and music performances in different parts of the ancient town, along a lit route you can walk freely.

The Fridays were 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31 July and 7 August, with one extra evening on Saturday 26 September for European Heritage Days. Each night had two shifts, 20:00 to 21:30 and 22:00 to 23:30. Booking was compulsory, even for free tickets. By 5 August the Park reported 4,852 tickets sold over five evenings, more than the whole 2025 season. If you want one evening visit in the Bay of Naples and you can plan ahead, this is the format that has proved the most repeatable. Herculaneum and the other Vesuvian sites are covered in our guide to the area.

Where to find the program when it comes out

Three sources carry the real dates. Everything else, including tour pages that promise an evening visit, is a copy of them.

  1. The Park of Pompeii's events calendar and press releases at pompeiisites.org. The 2026 autumn program has its own event page there, and the Night of Museums releases come from the same place.
  2. The Park of Herculaneum's news and events pages at ercolano.cultura.gov.it for the Friday evenings.
  3. The ticket channel named in the release. In 2026 the Park pointed to Vivaticket; earlier years used TicketOne. Evening tickets were sold separately from the day ticket.

If a tour or ticket product promises a night visit, it should name the Park program and the date. If it does not, ask the seller before you pay. A date that does not appear in any of the three sources above is not confirmed by the Park.

Planning the rest of the trip

Evening dates are the last thing to settle. Start with how long you need and how you will get there.

Sunset: when the light goes and where to see it

Visitors often mean something simpler than a night opening. They want the low light on the stones, or the sun going down. For that, the clock matters more than the Park's calendar. The figures below are our own calculation, using the NOAA solar position formulas for the Forum (40.7489 N, 14.4848 E) on the 15th of each month, in local time. The closing times are the Park's winter and summer hours as of November 2026.

November16:4417:1317:0016 minutes after sunset
December16:3517:0617:0025 minutes after sunset

On the 15th of each month from February to October the Park closes before the sun does, by 11 minutes in September and by about an hour and a half in June. The 19:00 closing falls after sunset from 16 to 28 March and from 23 September to 14 October, and the 17:00 closing falls after sunset from the start of November to mid-January. Those are the periods when you can still be inside at sunset, and in winter the last entry at 15:30 means you have roughly an hour of daylight left at the gate in December. If you want the evening light, aim for the late-afternoon entry slot on a winter day, and see our itineraries page for what fits in the last hours.

For a sunset over water, leave the ruins. The Gulf of Naples opens to the west, so the Naples waterfront and the coast of the Sorrento peninsula are the usual places. Both are within 40 minutes by direct train from Pompei Scavi: the EAV timetable valid from 17 October 2026 gives 38 minutes to Napoli Garibaldi and 36 to Sorrento. Leave time for the ride back: the last practical train is late in the evening, as the next section explains.

Getting home after dark

Nose of a red and grey high-speed train at an Italian station platform

The last train is earlier than the last show

The 2026 evening openings ended at 23:30. The direct trains of the Circumvesuviana line Naples to Sorrento, in the EAV timetable valid from 17 October 2026, run on a half-hour pattern and finish earlier: the last direct train from Pompei Scavi toward Naples leaves at 22:35 and reaches Napoli Garibaldi at 23:13. The last from Sorrento toward Pompei leaves at 22:00. In the other direction, the last from Napoli Porta Nolana reaches Pompei Scavi at 22:39.

That PDF lists only the direct services. We cannot tell you from it whether slower trains run later on a given night, so check EAV before you count on one. For a 23:30 finish, the safe options are a taxi or booked transfer, a car, or a bed nearby, which is the argument for staying in Pompei town in our base comparison. In 2026 the Park also ran a free shuttle between the Villa of the Mysteries and Boscoreale on evening nights; that is a shuttle between sites, not a ride home.

Safety and rules after dark

The Park's visitor regulation (decree 446 of 23 December 2025) sets the general rules, which what to wear and bring lists. Evening programs may add their own conditions, so read the ticket page. Two points matter more in low light. Article 9 warns of drops, variable levels and irregular paving across the itineraries, and recommends comfortable footwear. It also warns of stray dogs that get in through fences; keep your distance.

The British government's travel advice for Italy flags bag-snatching and pickpocketing at major attractions and on public transport, particularly in crowded stations. It does not single out the Circumvesuviana, and neither do we.

If no evening opening is running

Most of the year no evening opening runs. Three ways to get a late, quiet visit anyway:

  • Take the afternoon entry slot. The second entry window runs from 13:00 to the last entry, which is 17:30 from 16 March to 14 October and 15:30 the rest of the year. A later start means a shorter visit, but it is the closest thing to an evening visit on a regular ticket. The crowd calendar shows how busy each month runs.
  • Choose Herculaneum for the later last entry. Its summer gates close at 19:30 with the last entry at 18:00, but the Park asks visitors to be out of the excavation by 19:00 (16:40 in winter), against a 19:00 closing and a 17:30 last entry at Pompeii (as of November 2026). It takes about two hours, according to the Herculaneum Park's FAQ.
  • Watch the light from the coast. See the sunset table above.

Pompeii at night: common questions

Can I enter Pompeii after 19:00 with a regular ticket?

No. The Park closes at 19:00 at the latest, with the last entry at 17:30, from 16 March to 14 October, and at 17:00 with the last entry at 15:30 from 15 October to 15 March (as of November 2026). Evening entry exists only during announced programs, with separate tickets.

Are there night tours of Pompeii?

The Park describes evening visits as dated programs, not as a standing service. Any product that sells a night visit should name the program and the date. If it cannot, ask before booking.

What time is sunset at Pompeii?

It ranges from about 16:35 in mid-December to about 20:35 in mid-June, by our calculation for the 15th of each month. On the 15th of each month from February to October the Park closes before sunset; from November to mid-January, and in two short windows (16 to 28 March and 23 September to 14 October), it closes after sunset.

How do I find out about the next evening opening?

Watch the Park of Pompeii's events calendar and press releases, and the Park of Herculaneum's news page. In 2026 the Night of Museums release came four days before the evening, and the July program was published the day after its first date, so the dates may appear late.

Are evening openings good for children?

It depends on the route. The spring 2026 route included the exhibition of the plaster casts of the victims. Our page on the body casts explains how to approach them with young visitors, and the kids page covers the rest.

How do I get back to Naples or Sorrento at night?

The last direct train from Pompei Scavi toward Naples leaves at 22:35, per the EAV timetable valid from 17 October 2026. Evening openings in 2026 ended at 23:30, so plan a taxi, a transfer or a bed nearby, and check EAV for later services.

Can I watch a show at the Large Theatre?

Yes, in summer. The Park hosted four productions there from 20 June to 20 July 2025, run with Teatro di Napoli, and a ninth edition ran from 18 June to 12 July 2026 (ANSA). Theatre tickets are sold separately from the day ticket, and each season's dates are announced shortly before it starts.

Does Herculaneum open in the evening too?

Yes, in summer. Its Friday evenings have run since 2018, and in 2026 there were six, from 3 July to 7 August, plus one on 26 September, with booking required for all tickets.
