A wide paved street of Pompeii between brick ruins with mountains behind and a few visitors far away

Plan your visit

How long, which ticket, which train: settle it before you go

Pompeii covers 44 excavated hectares of uneven Roman paving, tickets are issued in your name with a daily cap, and from mid-October the last entry comes at mid-afternoon. Twelve guides take the decisions in the order you face them, from how many hours to give the site to which station to get off at.

We are independent and not affiliated with the Archaeological Park of Pompeii. The Park's own rules, timetables and data are our sources, checked in November 2026.

When to go

Heat, crowds or short days: every month trades one for another

We read the Park's monthly visitor counts. From April to October Pompeii takes about four fifths of its yearly visitors, and an average April or May day sees around 16,000 people against a cap of 20,000. July and August bring the heat, with very little shade on the site; November to February brings room to move and an early last entry.

The seasons pages set those numbers next to 30 years of climate data for the bay, so you can pick the trade-off that suits you.

Discover Pompeii

Know what you are looking at before you walk in

A street of ruins means more once you can read it: the three-part address scholars give every door, the counter of a snack bar, a wall painted in the Fourth Style. These pages cover the eruption phase by phase from Pliny's letters, how the town was found from 1748 on, its houses and daily life, and what a 2024 DNA study changed about the body casts.

Every claim carries its source, and where scholars disagree, as on the date of the eruption, we say so.

Beyond Pompeii

Pompeii is one town of many around the bay

Vesuvius buried more than Pompeii. The villas of Oplontis, Stabiae and Boscoreale sit a few kilometres away and see a fraction of the visitors. The best finds from all of them hang in the Naples Archaeological Museum. South of Salerno, Paestum keeps three Greek temples; west of Naples, the Phlegraean Fields hold Cumae, Baia and Pozzuoli.

Our comparison says what each site is, how long it takes and who it suits.
