Pompeii tour from Rome: the day hour by hour, by train or coach

20 day tours from Rome run 8 to 14 hours at a median of 12, priced 54 to 288 EUR. Here is what each version of the day leaves you at the gates.

The 20 Pompeii tours that leave from Rome last 12 hours at the median. The shortest takes 8, the longest 14, and the price runs from 54 EUR to 288 EUR for the same ruins in the same single day. The chart further down shows that the length of the day does not explain the gap. What does is how many of those hours you spend at the gates. As of November 2026 the last entry is 17:30 from 16 March to 14 October and 15:30 from 15 October to 15 March, with closing at 19:00 and 17:00. How the site works, its tickets and its rules are on the Pompeii page.

The tour figures are the 20 listings read on 4 November 2026: 17 from Viator, all priced per person, and 3 from Tiqets. Train times come from Trenitalia and Italo. The hours on site are our own arithmetic on those timetables and on the park's opening hours, and they are marked as estimates wherever they appear. Two things are left out: a total price for the do-it-yourself day, because no Trenitalia fare could be read, and any claim that a tour is "skip the line" in a way the park itself does not promise.

Two checks come first: whether the 20 EUR entry ticket is in the price (13 of the 20 listings say it is, and the other seven add 20 EUR a head) and which train the day relies on, since the only direct one, a Frecciarossa, runs on Sundays and Trenitalia's page gives no 2026 calendar.

Pompeii tour from Rome: four versions of the same day

Start with the clock: it is what differs between the four versions. Every version below leaves Rome in the morning and is back that night, and what changes is when you reach the gates and how long they stay open for you. The park publishes no recommended visit time, so none is implied here. The figures marked as estimates are ours.

Four versions of the day. The Sunday train times are Trenitalia's; every other time is our estimate from timetables and park hours.
Version Leaves Rome At the gates Time on site Back in Rome

Guided train tour9:15 meeting in Rome on the one listing we readNot statedGuided visit, then lunchAfter 9 hours on that listing

The guided train tour in the table is one Viator listing we opened. The group meets in Rome at 9:15, takes the fast train to Naples in about an hour, rides 35 minutes by coach to Pompeii, walks the site with a guide, and finishes with lunch and a tasting of four wines. It lasts 9 hours, takes up to 20 people and includes the train both ways. Tips are not included.

The two train versions differ by about two hours at the site, and the gap is in the first line of the table: the Sunday service reaches the gates later than a 7:30 departure does. The coach day is harder to price in hours. Take 12 and subtract about five of coach, at an operator's own figure of two and a half hours each way, and seven remain for the guide, lunch, free time and, in 11 of the 20 tours, the Amalfi Coast. Twelve hours is the length of the tour; the time at Pompeii is whatever the road leaves.

Passenger train standing at a platform of Roma Termini railway station in Rome

Every version starts on a platform at Termini

Italo's own page says 55 minutes non-stop and counts 31 trains a day each way, from 14.90 EUR. The Frecciarossa 9693, the Sunday one that carries on to Pompei, is timetabled at 1 h 10 to Napoli Centrale. So there is no single journey time, and the platform under the wood and metal canopy in the picture is where the fast trains to Naples leave.

We found no published Trenitalia fare for Rome to Naples. Blogs quote anything from 13 to 40 EUR a leg, which is why this page gives no door to door total for the do-it-yourself day: price it for your date, per leg, before you compare it with a tour. From Napoli Centrale the last stretch is local, and the From Naples and Sorrento page covers it.

The Sunday Frecciarossa to Pompei: check the date

Trenitalia's page for the service, read on 4 November 2026, describes a direct Frecciarossa active every Sunday. Train 9693 leaves Roma Termini at 8:53, reaches Napoli Centrale at 10:03 and Pompei at 10:40. Train 9568 leaves Pompei at 18:40 and is back at Termini at 20:55. The Ministry of Culture inaugurated the line on Sunday 16 July 2023, and it has run weekly since 6 August 2023. The Pompei Link bus from the station to the park is sold with the train ticket: choose Pompei Scavi when you book.

What the page does not give is a price or a period. A timetable aggregator lists 23 days between July and December 2026, and a blog from April gives 23 July to 8 October. Neither is official. Treat "every Sunday" as the pattern and your date as something to confirm on Trenitalia before you plan around it. With the 18:40 return you leave the park about 18:00, which is why the table shows seven hours in summer.

The corridor on the map

The map shows why the day splits in two. The long leg is between Rome and Naples, where the fast trains do the work in about an hour. Pompeii lies a little further along the same coast, and the last stretch from Naples is short but local. Coach tours take the road instead.

Map: Rome to Pompeii: the corridor a day trip runs along
Rome, Naples and Pompeii on one corridor: the long leg is by fast train, the last short one is local, and coach tours follow the road. ยท Pompeii Museum Editorial. Map data: Natural Earth, public domain

Strikes: look before you pick the train

Empty platforms and tracks under the canopy of Roma Termini station, Rome

Where a strike bites

A rail strike empties the platforms of Termini seen along the tracks in the picture, and with it the premise of the do-it-yourself day, so check the Ministry of Transport's strike list the week you travel. The entries are below; a coach tour does not depend on the rail timetable. The list names no Trenitalia strike for these dates, and we did not read the guaranteed-service bands that apply to each.

Why 12 hours cost anywhere from 54 to 288 EUR

Chart of the prices of the 20 tours behind the From Rome page on pompeii.museum, median 122.9 EUR

Length does not set the price

Each dot is a tour, 19 of the 20 placed by length and price. If the length set the price, the dots would climb to the right. They do not. At 12 hours the tours run from 54 EUR to 288 EUR, and at 13 hours from 69 to 199. The four listings under 80 EUR (54, 56, 69 and 76) all last 12 or 13 hours, and three of them add Sorrento or the coast.

The four whose titles name a train cost 169 to 254 EUR and take 9 to 11.5 hours: you pay more to spend fewer hours and to skip the coach. The 8 hour listing is a wine tasting and lunch at 210 EUR. The median, 122.9 EUR, is a line through this scatter and not a typical price. The 17 Viator prices are per person; the 3 from Tiqets carry no unit in the data.

Seven listings leave the ticket out. On those, the Express ticket at 20 EUR comes on top, and the Pompeii page explains how it works. Only one listing uses skip-the-line wording; the park promises none, since the cap and the slots apply to everyone.

Eleven of the 20 add the coast. If Pompeii is the reason for the trip, nine listings leave it out, and the Pompeii + Amalfi Coast page deals with the compromise in the other direction. The tours are run by 16 operators and are rated 4.61 on 23,638 reviews.

One operator holds 68% of those reviews, so the 4.61 is mostly its rating.

Train, coach or guided train tour: who each suits

Which version fits what you want, from the 20 listings and the timetables above.
If you want Take What it costs you
The most hours inside the parkThe fast train and the local train, no tourThe booking, the timetable and the way back, and a strike is your problem
A guide and no logisticsA guided train tour169 to 254 EUR on the four listings that name a train, and a fixed pace
The lowest priceA coach tour at 54 to 76 EUR12 to 13 hours, mostly on the road, and in three of four the coast as well
A Sunday and no tourThe direct FrecciarossaA date to confirm, and gates at about 11:00

Our view: a 12 hour coach day is built around the coast and the lunch, and Pompeii gets what is left of the clock. If Pompeii is the reason for the trip, the train versions spend your hours better. If the coast is the reason, buy the coast and treat the ruins as the first stop.

A night in Naples removes the two hours of travel at each end of the day.

The Naples and Sorrento page reads the shorter tours that start there.

Slips that eat the hours

Three slips repeat in the posts and listings we read. Gate rules are on the Pompeii page.

Three slips on the Rome to Pompeii run, with the fix.
Slip Why it costs the day What to do
An old ticket priceMany posts still quote 18 EUR for the ticket. The Express ticket has been 20 EUR since 12 January 2026, and Pompeii+ 25 EUR.Budget 20 EUR a head where the listing leaves the ticket out.
Reading a title as a packageA Tiqets listing at 99 EUR called "Skip The Line Ticket + Roundtrip from Rome" states no length and lists one inclusion, the entry.Find out what the round trip is before you count it as a train fare.
A winter returnThe park closes at 17:00 from 15 October, so the 18:40 Sunday return leaves 1 h 40 between closing and departure.Plan the afternoon around the closing time, not the train.

Questions about Pompeii from Rome

Can you visit Pompeii in a day from Rome?

Yes. The 20 tours we read from Rome last 8 to 14 hours, 12 at the median, and on your own the fast train reaches Naples in 55 minutes to 1 h 10. By our estimate you reach the gates two to two and a half hours after leaving Termini, with 7 to 8 hours on site in summer and 5 to 6 in winter.

Is there a direct train from Rome to Pompeii?

On Sundays, according to Trenitalia's page: train 9693 leaves Termini at 8:53 and reaches Pompei at 10:40, and train 9568 returns at 18:40. The page shows no price and no calendar, and sources disagree on the 2026 dates, so confirm yours first. On other days you change at Naples.

How much does a Pompeii tour from Rome cost?

On the 17 Viator listings the price is per person, and across all 20 the median is 122.9 EUR, from 54 to 288, with half between 99 and 211.8. Thirteen include the entry ticket; for the other seven add the 20 EUR Express ticket. The cheapest are 12 to 13 hour coach days, and the high-speed-train tours start at 169 EUR.

What happens if there is a rail strike?

The Ministry of Transport list shows Italo on 9 November, the rail sector from 20 November at 21:00 to 21 November at 20:00 with EAV named, and a rail strike from 3 December at 21:00 to 4 December at 21:00. Check the list again the week you travel. A coach tour does not depend on the rail timetable.

Data verified on . Fares, times and strikes from Trenitalia, Italo and the Ministry of Transport, read 4 November 2026. Tour figures from 20 listings read the same day.
