Pompeii tour from Naples or Sorrento: the tour against the local train
20 half-day tours, a median 75.3 EUR for 4 hours, set against the Circumvesuviana: which stop to use, what the listings include and why Positano costs more.
From Naples or Sorrento there are two ways to Pompeii: the local train, or a half-day tour. The 20 tours on this page last 4 hours at the median and cost 75.3 EUR a person, from 31.5 to 249. The cheapest is not a tour in the usual sense. It is the train and the entry ticket with a guide or an audio guide added, and its price sits close to what the parts would cost you. Three stops all get called Pompei and only one suits most visitors, and the three tours that start in Positano or Amalfi cost more than double the rest.
Figures are the 20 listings read on 4 November 2026: 17 from Viator, 2 from Civitatis and 1 from Tiqets. Ticket prices are the park's, and the Pompeii page has its rules. Prices are per person as the providers list them, and a date or a group size can move them. Local train times come from blogs, and the fare is left out of every total because EAV's own timetable and fare tables were not readable; whatever a blog says is marked as an estimate. The strike calendar and the long-distance trains are on the From Rome page, so this one stays with the local line, the stops and the tours that start on the bay. From Sorrento the ride is about 30 minutes by blog accounts, so the choice there is rarely about speed and mostly about who walks you through the site. No listing here includes Herculaneum or Vesuvius. One of the 12 operators holds 19% of the 13,560 reviews, which sets much of the 4.5 rating.

A half-day tour or the local train: what changes
On your own you pay the park's ticket and a fare to Pompei Scavi, and booking a slot, reading a timetable and deciding what to see is your job. A tour moves that job to someone else for the difference in price. The table uses only what we could read, and says where a figure comes from blogs.
| On your own, by train | Half-day tour, median of 20 | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | 20 EUR Express ticket plus a local train ticket of a few euro; EAV's fare was not readable | 75.3 EUR per person, from 31.5 to 249 |
| Time away | About 30 to 40 minutes each way from Naples by blog accounts, plus your visit | 4 hours at the median, from 2 to 6 |
| Ticket | You book a named ticket and a slot | Included in 15 of the 20 |
| Guide | The park's rented audio guide, or none | A guide or archaeologist in 11 of the 20 |
| Pick-up | None; you walk to the station | A pick-up in 8 of the 20 |
| Time at the ruins | Yours: the budgets on the Pompeii page are about 3 hours and 5 to 6 | On the 5 hour Sorrento listing we read, a guided walk of 2 to 2.5 hours |
Test it on the cheapest listing. The Express ticket alone is 20 EUR, so a 31.5 EUR listing leaves 11.50 EUR above the entry, if that is the ticket it includes, for a round trip by train, a guide or an audio guide, and the seller's margin. Its conditions say the booking is not refundable, and the guided option meets you at Napoli Centrale. It is the do-it-yourself day with the booking done, and that is a fair thing to buy.
Doing it yourself costs the 20 EUR ticket plus a local train ticket of a few euro, and EAV's fare was not readable, so we give no total. The median tour, at 75.3 EUR, adds a guide, a pick-up in 8 listings out of 20 and nobody to decide for you. How much that is worth depends on how much of the planning you want to keep.
Five of the 20 listings leave the entry ticket out, and on those the 20 EUR comes on top.
Three stops called Pompei
This is the mistake that ruins an afternoon, and the park warns about it on its own page. Three different stops carry the name, on two railway companies. The table follows the Parco Archeologico di Pompei's page on how to get there, as it stood in November 2026.
| Stop | Line | Gate it serves | Right for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pompei Scavi-Villa dei Misteri | Circumvesuviana, Naples to Sorrento line | Porta Marina and Piazza Esedra | Almost everyone: trains from Naples and from Sorrento stop here |
| Pompei Santuario | Circumvesuviana, Naples to Poggiomarino line | Piazza Anfiteatro | The amphitheater end of the site |
| Pompei | Trenitalia, Naples to Salerno line | None directly; the Pompei Link bus takes about 15 minutes | Trenitalia arrivals, such as the Sunday Frecciarossa from Rome |
From Naples the Circumvesuviana is the usual choice, and blogs from 2026 give 30 to 40 minutes. EAV's timetable was not readable, so take that as an estimate. The fare is an estimate too: no EAV page we found names the Naples to Pompei Scavi price, and the blogs that quote one disagree, so the price is best checked at the station or on EAV's site. A tourist train, the Campania Express, ran between Naples, Pompei and Sorrento. The press reports it suspended from 1 October 2026 until further notice, but EAV's live page would not open for us, so confirm before you count on it.
From Sorrento the train is the fast part
Sorrento sits across the Bay of Naples from Vesuvius, and from there the Pompeii run is the shortest start on this page. The same Naples to Sorrento line stops at Pompei Scavi, and blogs put the ride at about 30 minutes. That is why the 5 hour Sorrento listing we read, with the entry included and a guided walk of 2 to 2.5 hours, spends at least half of its length on other things: the transfer, the meeting at Piazza Tasso and free time.
At 75 EUR that listing sits on the median. It sells the guide, the transfer and the entry in one booking; from Sorrento the train is already quick.
Where the pick-ups sit
Pompeii lies between Naples and Sorrento on the same railway, with Castellammare di Stabia a few stops on toward Sorrento. Naples and Sorrento are the two ends of the Circumvesuviana line that stops at Pompei Scavi, which is why one page covers both. Salerno, to the right on the map, is on a different line and has its own page for ships: Cruise shore excursions.
Why a pick-up in Positano costs more
The start town moves the price more than the length
Most listings sit between 3 and 4 hours and between 50 and 90 EUR, and the one private listing, a 2 hour express by train from Sorrento, is the blue diamond at 56 EUR. Each dot is one listing and the median is 75.3 EUR. The two 6 hour listings are a lunch with wine tasting from Naples at 120 EUR and one from Positano at 249 EUR, 129 EUR apart for the same format.
Per hour the private express costs more than the 5 hour Sorrento tour, 28 EUR against 15, and it is the shorter day, so the per-hour figure alone is a poor guide. The Private tours page explains what moves a private price.
| Start named in the title | Listings | Price range, EUR | Median, EUR | Length |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Naples | 8 | 32 to 120 | 69.5 | 3 to 6 h |
| Sorrento | 5 | 56 to 139 | 85 | 2 to 5 h |
| Positano or Amalfi | 3 | 169 to 249 | 179 | 4 to 6 h |
| Naples or Sorrento | 1 | 85 | 85 | 4 h |
| No town in the title | 3 | 59 to 120 | 73 | 3 to 3.5 h |
The Naples row needs a caveat: its low of 32 EUR is the train and ticket listing, and without it the range starts at 50 EUR. The coast pick-ups cost more because the day includes the road along the coast and, in one of the three, lunch with wine. The Pompeii + Amalfi Coast page covers the version where the coast is the point.
The three Positano and Amalfi listings have a median of 179 EUR; the eight that name Naples, 69.50.
What is inside the 20 bookings
Fifteen of the 20 include the entry ticket; the other five leave you to buy it. Eleven name a guide or an archaeologist, and the Guided tours at the site page sorts out what those words mean. Eight include a pick-up, which is the one thing a train cannot do. Seven use skip-the-line wording, but the park promises no shortcut, since the cap and the slots apply to everyone: the wording means the operator books your slot.
Two include lunch, two a wine tasting and two the train. None includes Herculaneum or Vesuvius, and for those there are the Pompeii + Herculaneum and Pompeii + Vesuvius pages.
Where the day goes wrong
Getting off at the wrong stop costs the most, and the table above settles it. Close behind is reading the 31.5 EUR listing as a tour: its guided option is two hours at the ruins, and the audio-guided option leaves you alone. The train fare is the third trap, because no page we could read gives it, so the price is worth checking at the station, and the Campania Express stays out of the plan until EAV says it runs.
The 6 hour listings add lunch and a wine tasting, so the extra hours are not extra ruins.
Questions about Pompeii from Naples and Sorrento
Is it better to go to Pompeii from Naples by train or with a tour?
By train if you want to set your own pace and can book the named ticket yourself: the cost is the 20 EUR Express ticket plus a local ticket of a few euro, since EAV's fare was not readable. With a tour if you want a guide and a pick-up: the median is 75.3 EUR, and 15 of the 20 include the entry.
Which station do I use for Pompeii?
Pompei Scavi-Villa dei Misteri, on the Circumvesuviana Naples to Sorrento line, for the Porta Marina and Piazza Esedra gates. Pompei Santuario, on a different branch, leads to Piazza Anfiteatro. The stop called Pompei belongs to Trenitalia and needs the Pompei Link bus, about 15 minutes, according to the park.
How long does the train take from Naples or Sorrento?
Blogs from 2026 give 30 to 40 minutes from Naples and about 30 from Sorrento. EAV's own timetable was not readable, so these are estimates. Check the departure on EAV's site or app on the day, and allow time for the walk from the stop to the gate.
How much is a Pompeii tour from Naples or Sorrento?
The median across the 20 listings is 75.3 EUR per person for 4 hours. Tours named for Naples run 32 to 120 EUR and for Sorrento 56 to 139. Fifteen of the 20 include the entry ticket. If yours does not, add the 20 EUR Express ticket.
Can I join a Pompeii tour from Positano or Amalfi?
Yes, three listings start there, at 169 to 249 EUR for 4 to 6 hours. They cost more because the day includes the coast road and, for one of them, a lunch with wine. For a day built around the coast itself, see the Pompeii + Amalfi Coast page.
Is the Campania Express running?
The press reports it suspended from 1 October 2026 until further notice (Napolike, 12 August 2026). EAV's live page would not open for us, so confirm there before you plan around it. The ordinary Circumvesuviana runs to Pompei Scavi in the meantime.
