The early start is what sets this tour apart. The coach leaves Sorrento in the morning ahead of the traffic, and the priority entrance means the group walks into Pompeii without waiting in the ticket queue.

An official guide leads a walking tour of 2 hours 30 minutes along the ancient cardini and decumani, past baths, bakeries and forums that were part of daily life, and into villas with frescoes still on their walls. The itinerary stops below give the order of the day, from the Porta Marina gate to the Forum and the House of the Faun.

  1. Piazza Torquato Tasso, 16, Sorrento

Meet the guide at the entrance of the Gray Line "IAMME IA!" office, behind the statue of Torquato Tasso, near Bar Fauno and next to the Fattoria Terranova shop. Arrive 10 minutes before departure.

  2. Meet the guide in Sorrento

Meet the guide at the meeting point for an early departure, ahead of the crowds and the midday heat. Arriving 15 minutes early is recommended.

  3. Archaeological Park of Pompeii

The park is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD froze the city in place, and its streets, villas with frescoes, temples and theaters can still be walked.

  4. Porta Marina gate

The group enters through Porta Marina, the most monumental of Pompeii's seven gates, built for travelers arriving from the sea. Its double arch kept pedestrians and carriages apart.

  5. Foro de Pompeya

The Forum was the center of the city, surrounded by temples and public buildings where politics and trade took place. Vesuvius is visible in the distance from the square.

  6. Macellum

The Macellum was Pompeii's provision market, on the Forum. It was built in several phases and was damaged in the earthquake of 62 CE.

  7. Stabian Baths (Terme Stabiane)

The baths date to the years just after General Sulla founded the veterans' colony (80 BC). Men and women had separate entrances. The men's section has a dressing room (apodyterium) that doubled as a tepidarium, plus a frigidarium for cold baths and a calidarium for hot ones. The earthquake of 62 AD heavily damaged them.

  8. Tempio di Giove Capitolino

The Capitolium, with statues of Jupiter, Juno and Minerva placed high so people crossing the Forum could see them, as in the Capitolium of Rome. Vesuvius rises behind it.

  9. Casa del Fauno

One of the largest private houses in Pompeii, filling an entire city block. It is named after the bronze dancing faun found in its atrium and is best known for the Alexander Mosaic, which shows the battle between Alexander the Great and Darius III of Persia. It has two peristyle gardens and mosaic floors.

  10. Via dell’Abbondanza

The main street of ancient Pompeii (decumanus maximus), running east to west from the Forum to the Porta Sarno. It was crowded and noisy, lined with shops, workshops, cafes, snack bars and restaurants.

  11. Basilica

The Basilica covered 1,500 square meters and was the most sumptuous building on the Forum, used for business and for the administration of justice.

  12. Teatro Grande

The Large Theater was built into a natural hollow on a hillside, with an auditorium divided into five sectors. Greco-Roman tragedies were staged here.

  13. Lupanar

The Lupanar, also called Lupanare Grande, is the most famous brothel in Pompeii, known for the erotic paintings on its walls. The name is Latin for brothel.

  14. Sorrento

    Return to Sorrento by coach.

  15. Piazza Torquato Tasso, 16, Sorrento
