Herculaneum tour: what the ticket covers and which format to book
A 16 EUR park ticket, two closed areas, and 20 tours from 19.50 to 290 EUR, split between shared visits and private guides.
A ticket to Herculaneum costs 16 EUR at the park, 17.50 EUR with the online presale, and the cheapest listing in the catalogue sells the same entry for 19.50 EUR. The median Herculaneum tour is 105 EUR, because eleven of the twenty listings are private. Three things are on sale for this small Roman town buried in 79 AD: the entry ticket alone, a two-hour group tour with the ticket inside, or a private guide. The rest of the page says what each one leaves out. How Herculaneum compares with Pompeii is settled on the Italy page.
The tour figures come from 20 listings read on 4 November 2026, from 16 operators on three platforms. They fall into five formats: the entry ticket alone, group visits at the site, group visits starting from Naples or Sorrento, and private guides priced per person or per group; the table further down counts each one. Park prices, hours and closures come from the park's own ticket page, read on 3 and 4 November. That page carries no update date, so treat it as a snapshot. We opened three of the listings in full to see what their prices include, because the title of a listing often does not say. The largest operator holds 35% of the reviews. Prices are the providers' own, in euros, as listed on that day. They move, and the park's rules move faster, so the date attached to each fact matters as much as the fact.

Herculaneum tour or ticket only: what each route costs
The park sells its own ticket online. Retailers sell the same entry on its own, bundled with a guide, or with an extra. The table puts the routes side by side, with the prices read on the day.
| Route | Price | What the listing says |
|---|---|---|
| Park ticket office | 16 EUR | Entry only; 2 EUR for ages 18 to 25 |
| Park online presale | 17.50 EUR | Entry, with the 1.50 EUR presale fee |
| Retailer entry ticket | 19.50 EUR | Entry only |
| Guide only, up to 6 people | 27.55 EUR | Guide and archaeologist; the park ticket is listed as not included |
| Small group with an archaeologist | 35 EUR | 2 hours; the ticket is in the title |
| Guided tour from a second retailer | 35 EUR | English-speaking guide and the 16 EUR entry, listed as included |
| Skip-the-line ticket with a 3D tour | 40 EUR | Entry, augmented reality glasses and an assistant, 2 hours |
Two things stand out. At 35 EUR for guide and ticket together, the guide costs about 19 EUR once the 16 EUR entry is taken out. That is less than the 27.55 EUR guide-only listing, which asks you to buy the entry on top. Same two hours, a higher total. The second point is the 2 EUR gap between the park's presale and the retailer's entry ticket. We cannot name anything it buys beyond the convenience of booking in one place, and we found no queue figure for Herculaneum on the park's ticket page, and no daily cap or named ticket of the kind Pompeii has. That is the absence of evidence, not proof, so check the page again before you travel.

The winter hours cap what a tour can do. If you must be out by 16:40, a two hour guided tour has to start by about 14:40, and that is our arithmetic, not a park figure.
The ancient shore
Where the town ended at the water
Boat sheds stood under the vaulted arches in the picture, on the beach of the Roman town. The park counts about 300 skeletons found in nine of the twelve arches, in excavations that began in 1980: people who had crowded there as the eruption began. The ground in front of the arches was beach.
As of November 2026 the park does not say which of those finds a visitor can see, so do not promise a child a skeleton.
How the eruption of 79 AD treated this town
The park's own account gives numbers. First came glowing clouds at about 400 ยฐC and more than 80 km/h, then flows of mud, until the town lay under about 20 meters of material. The wood is why people come to look: according to Wikipedia, roofs, beds and doors survived here as charcoal.
The town covered about 20 hectares, and the park says just over 4 of them can be seen.

The 2001 line is the one the ticket sellers skip.
The park describes the Herculaneum Conservation Project as the first long-term partnership between public and private money of its kind in Italy.
What you can walk into, and what is shut
The names worth knowing are the Casa dei Cervi, a house of the Claudian age named after two statues of deer attacked by dogs, with a terrace over the gulf; the Casa del Mosaico di Nettuno e Anfitrite; the central baths; the Collegio degli Augustali; and the large palaestra with its cross-shaped pool. The park's page lists only two areas as closed, the Villa of the Papyri and the ancient theater. It says nothing about single houses, and houses at ancient sites open and close in rotation, so ask the guide what is open on your day.
The Villa of the Papyri deserves a warning of its own, because its name sells tours. It is closed. Many finds from the villa, and some of its papyri, are in Naples, where the museum has a Villa of the Papyri section open every day from 10:00 to 18:20; the Naples archaeology page covers it. That section is not the villa at Herculaneum, which stays closed.
A Roman snack counter
A shop counter with the jars still in it
The marble counter in the picture belonged to a thermopolium, a Roman street food shop. The large jars sunk into the counter are still in place, held there by the volcanic mud.
A guide would point this out. Of the 20 listings, 14 name a guide or an archaeologist and 6 say the ticket is included.
Herculaneum
Roman seaside town buried by Vesuvius in 79 AD, now the Parco Archeologico di Ercolano, entered from Corso Resina.
Corso Resina 187, Ercolano
Getting there, and the volcano behind the town
The park's own page says to take the Circumvesuviana line from Naples to Sorrento and get off at Ercolano Scavi, then walk 6 minutes to Corso Resina 187. By car it is the A3, exit Ercolano Scavi. One travel blog from February 2025 says trains toward Sorrento no longer stop at Ercolano Scavi during opening hours; we could not confirm it, so check the timetable the day before. The press reported the Campania Express tourist train as suspended from 1 October 2026, unless it has reopened since.
On the map the next thing up the slope is Vesuvius. The Gran Cono trail starts at the Piazzale di Quota 1000 above Ercolano, with a shuttle from the Quota 800 car park at 1 EUR a ride, about 4 minutes. The rules for the climb are on the Pompeii and Vesuvius page, and the day with both sites is on Pompeii and Herculaneum.
Five formats in 20 listings
Of the 20 listings, 16 are on Viator, 3 on Tiqets and 1 on Civitatis, from 16 operators. Of the 16 Viator listings, 13 are priced per person and 3 per group, and all three per-group listings are private: 184, 240 and 290 EUR.
| Format | Listings | Price range | What changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entry ticket only | 1 | 19.50 EUR | Nothing beyond the entry |
| Group visit at the site | 6 | 28 to 42 EUR | Whether the ticket is in the price |
| Group visit starting from Naples or Sorrento | 2 | 70 and 80 EUR | 3 to 4 hours, with transport |
| Private, priced per person | 8 | 85 to 190 EUR | Length: 1.5 to 4 hours |
| Private, priced per group | 3 | 184 to 290 EUR | How many people share the bill |
The chart makes the gap plain: every shared tour costs 80 EUR or less and every private one costs 85 or more. The middle half of all listings runs from 38.80 EUR to 166.80 EUR, and the 105 EUR median falls between the two groups. The entry ticket alone holds 1,594 of the 4,602 reviews, at 4.5. The small group tour with an archaeologist is 4.8 on 1,314. The weighted 4.69 hides that gap.
How we would choose
For a first visit we would take the 35 EUR small group tour with the ticket in the price. Two hours, a guide, and no second purchase. A private guide at 165 EUR a head is the same two hours that one operator also lists at 35 EUR in a group, nearly five times the price, and it pays only for a family with small children or a visitor with a particular question. The two group listings that start from Naples or Sorrento cost 70 and 80 EUR, and the difference from the 35 EUR tour is the transport, not the town.
The same errors repeat: a guide bought without the ticket, a late start in winter, the wrong meeting point. The three listings we opened name the park's ticket office, not the station, so allow the walk: 6 minutes on the park's page, 10 on one operator's. "Skip the line" is on 4 of the 20 listings; where we found no cap, we read it as a retailer's label.

The Pompeii and Herculaneum page splits a day between the two sites, hour by hour, and says who should not try it.
