Herculaneum Small Group Tour with an Archaeologist Guide and Entry Tickets (7/7)

An archaeologist leads this small group visit, and the Herculaneum entry tickets are already included. The town was home to merchants and nobility until 79 AD, when its life ended with striking speed.

The walk starts at the waterfront, where more than 300 remains of people trying to escape by sea were found. From there it moves through the Samnite house, the thermal baths, the Temple of the Augustales, the forum, the House of Neptune and Amphitrite, the Gymnasium and the House of the Wooden Partition.

The site holds more than stone, marble and ceramics. Carbonised wood survives, along with paintings and mosaics that the guide sets above those of Pompeii. The cause was the force of the eruption: it burned all the wood at once and sealed the city under a thick layer that let in no air, so nothing decayed.

  2. Archeological Park of Herculaneum

Meeting point is the ticket office of the Herculaneum ruins. By car, use via Pignalver, where an unguarded car park is very close. By train, the Circumvesuviana station at Corso Resina 1 is a 10-minute walk away.

  3. House of the Deer

Named for the marble statues of stags found in the peristyle.

  4. La Terrazza di M. Nonio Balbo

Marcus Nonius Balbus was the city's major benefactor, restoring and building many public buildings. After his death he was made patron and honoured at length, as the long inscription on his funeral altar records.

  5. College of the Augustales

Thought to have been a centre of the cult of Emperor Augustus and the seat of the Collegium Augustalium, or possibly the local curia.

  6. House Linked to the Suburban Baths

Possibly the home of Marcus Nonius Balbus, one of the town's leading benefactors. Unusually, it has its own private access to the Suburban Thermae to the south.

  7. Partem Domus lignea - Casa del Tramezzo di Legno

Important for the elegant wooden partition that still stands.

  8. House of the Skeleton

Probably three smaller buildings joined together. It takes its name from human remains found in a second-floor room in 1831.

  9. Central Thermae

Built around the start of the 1st century AD and split into men's and women's baths, each with its own entrance.

  10. House of the Black Hall

One of Herculaneum's more luxurious mansions. Its monumental entrance still keeps the carbonised remains of the doorposts and lintel.

  11. Casa Sannitica

Laid out in the typical Samnite way, with a splendid atrium edged by a gallery of Ionic columns. The rooms are decorated with frescoes.

  12. Casa del Bel Cortile

One of the most original houses in Herculaneum, with a courtyard, a stairway and a stone balcony in place of an atrium.

  13. House of the Grand Portal

A fine domus in the centre of the archaeological area, with several rooms, colonnades, frescoes and charred remains of wooden parts.

  14. Ercolano

The tour ends inside the Herculaneum ruins.
