Herculaneum Morning Guided Tour by Bus from Sorrento or Naples, Ticket Included (7/7)

A 30-seater bus collects the group in Sorrento or Naples, which makes this the Herculaneum tour for travelers who would rather not organize their own transport. Entry to the archaeological park is part of the booking, and guests wear headsets so the guide stays audible on the narrow streets.

Herculaneum is smaller than Pompeii, but the 79 AD eruption buried it so completely that houses, streets and decoration survived. An authorized English-speaking guide walks the site for 1.5 hours, stopping at houses such as the Casa dei Cervi, the Casa del Salone Nero and the Casa di Nettuno e Anfitrite. The itinerary can change at the guide's discretion.

The whole outing takes about four hours. Lunch is not included.

Meeting point for the Sorrento departure (choose the Sorrento option when booking). Be there at 8:15 am at the Achille Lauro car park, near the Info Point area.

  1. Archeological Park of Herculaneum

Bus transfer to Herculaneum, then a 1.5-hour visit to the ruins with an authorized guide. Once a small, refined Roman city, Herculaneum was buried under meters of ash and pumice by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. Streets, houses and villas have been excavated and can be seen today. The itinerary may vary at the guide's discretion.

  2. House of the Hotel

A Roman house buried by the 79 AD eruption and brought to light by the excavations. It stands on the edge of the hill in a panoramic position. At 2,050 square meters it is the largest house found so far in Herculaneum and the only one with a spa area, which is why it was first taken for a hotel.

  3. Sacellum of the Augustales

Built near the forum while Emperor Augustus was still alive and in power, this square building keeps splendid frescoes of Hercules entering Olympus with Jupiter, Juno and Minerva, and of Hercules fighting Achelous. The skeleton of the custodian was found in his room, lying on the bed.

  4. Casa dei Cervi

A luxurious house with a sea-view terrace, owned by Q. Granius Verus, a slave freed shortly before Herculaneum was destroyed. The garden holds two statues of deer attacked by dogs, which give the house its name.

  5. Casa del Salone Nero

The house is named after a party hall painted entirely black with geometric patterns. Waxed tablets found here belonged to L. Venidius Ennychus, thought to be the owner. They record his eligibility for the Augustale, the purchase of a slave and the birth of a daughter.

  6. House of the Skeleton

Probably formed by joining three smaller buildings, the house takes its name from human remains found in a second-floor room in 1831.

  7. Casa di Nettuno e Anfitrite

The glass-paste mosaics, very expensive in their day, show floral and hunting scenes. At the center is the mosaic of Neptune and Amphitrite, the sea god and his consort.
