A private guide takes the group around the archaeological area of Herculaneum in about 90 minutes, in English or French. The site is small and only partly excavated, but it holds a dense record of Roman life: the ancient beach and the skeletons, the houses and villas, the shops, the bath houses and the gardens.

Food, clothes, bones and wooden furniture survive here in perfect condition, because of the particular volcanic material that settled in layers over the town. Herculaneum was a Roman colony buried by the same 79 AD eruption of Vesuvius that hit Pompeii.

Admission to the site is not included in the tour price.
