Pompeii and Herculaneum tour: two sites, one day, one clock

20 tours read one by one: 13 shared at a median 100 EUR, 7 private at a median 385. The two entrance tickets alone are 36 EUR; the rest is guide, transfer and time.

The cheapest Pompeii and Herculaneum tour in the catalog costs 63 EUR, and the two entrance tickets alone are 36 EUR at the gates, 20 for the Pompeii Express and 16 for Herculaneum. What a tour adds on top is a guide, a transfer and a timetable, and the first section works out how much money is left for them once the tickets are paid. The clock matters more. Two parks with different closing times share one day (the history of each town is on the Pompeii and Herculaneum pages), and from 15 October to 15 March both stop admitting at 15:30, with Herculaneum emptying at 16:40. From 16 March to 14 October the day is longer: the last entry is 17:30 at Pompeii and 18:00 at Herculaneum, and both sites close or empty at 19:00.

The tours are 18 from Viator and 2 from Tiqets, read on 4 November 2026. The largest operator holds half the reviews, so the 4.72 rating says more about one small-group tour than about the format. The 20 listings come from 16 operators and carry 4,258 reviews at a weighted 4.72. Thirteen are shared and seven private, and the 19 that state a length run from 4 to 11 hours with a median of 7. Ticket prices and hours come from the two parks' own sites, read the same day. Anything we could not confirm is marked as such in the text, including the train route between the two sites, which sources describe in two different ways.

What 36 EUR of tickets leave for the tour price

Start with what the gates charge: 20 EUR for the Pompeii Express and 16 EUR for Herculaneum, plus 1.50 EUR if you prebook Herculaneum online, as of November 2026. That is 36 or 37.50 EUR. The cheapest listing, from Mondo Guide, starts at 63 EUR and lists a guide at both sites and both entry tickets. The Askos Tours small group with an archaeologist starts at 63.75 EUR and lists headsets, guiding at both sites and both entry tickets. Askos sells four starting points, Naples, Sorrento, Rome or Pompeii itself, and the page does not say which option the from-price belongs to, so check the one you pick. The walking version from Pompeii, 6 hours, includes a one-way Circumvesuviana ticket to Herculaneum. As arithmetic and nothing more: if the 63.75 EUR belongs to that walking start, 63.75 minus 36 leaves 27.75 EUR for the guide, the headsets and the train ticket. One listing with four starting points does not make a median, so this is an example and not a typical split.

A second 63.75 EUR listing, on Tiqets, reads differently. Its included list names fast-track entry to Pompeii and a guided tour of both sites. It does not list a Herculaneum ticket or a length. Both may be covered; the list does not say so.

How the clock splits between the two parks

Pompeii is the rigid half of the day. Its ticket is named and tied to a morning or afternoon slot, and the afternoon slot has far fewer places; the numbers and the rules are on the Pompeii page. We found no time slots or daily cap on Herculaneum's ticket page, though we could not confirm that none exist. Put Pompeii first: its slot is fixed and the other park is not.

Opening hours of both parks, read on their own sites.

Colonnaded basilica and column drums on the forum of Pompeii under a clear sky

Pompeii first, because its slot is the fixed point

Most tours spend their first stop around the forum of Pompeii, with the basilica and the column drums in view. Book Pompeii in the morning slot and let Herculaneum take the hours that remain. The reverse order works in summer, but then Pompeii falls in the afternoon slot, which has far fewer places, and in the warm part of the day.

Here is a winter day built backward from the 16:40 exit. The durations are our assumptions, and the rest is our arithmetic, so it is a planning budget and not an operator timetable.

Time What happens Note
09:00 to 09:30Meet at the Pompeii gateThe walking option meets at Porta Marina Inferiore
09:30 to 12:00Guided Pompeii, 2 to 2.5 hoursAn assumption; most guided Pompeii tours in the catalog are listed at 2 hours

13:15 to 16:00Guided Herculaneum, 2 h 45The park empties at 16:40

The transfer is the part nobody agrees on. The park's own page gives 6 minutes on foot from the Ercolano Scavi stop to the entrance. The Askos listing says its walking version crosses by Circumvesuviana, with the ticket included, and gives no travel time. A travel blog says that since 2025 trains toward Sorrento no longer stop at Ercolano Scavi during opening hours, and that you change at Torre Annunziata, 35 minutes in all, while two other sites say 15 to 20 minutes direct. EAV's timetable was not readable for us. The operator should say which route the day uses; a minibus transfer removes the question. In summer there is more room, since Herculaneum admits until 18:00.

Eight-hour listings are the ones to check against the 16:40 exit before you book a winter date.
Map: Pompeii and Herculaneum
Naples is the usual start. Herculaneum lies on the coast toward Pompeii, with Vesuvius inland between them; the scale bar is 20 km. · Pompeii Museum Editorial. Map data: Natural Earth, public domain

On the map the two sites sit on the same stretch of coast, with Vesuvius inland between them. The sources we read give no distance or travel time between the two sites, which is why the transfer above is left unconfirmed. Three of the 20 listings add the volcano to the day, one of them a 535 EUR private tour from Sorrento; the Vesuvius page covers what the summit rules allow. A volcano plus two sites is more than a winter day holds.

Who should not book the two-site day

Heat and uneven stone matter as much as the clock. Naples averages highs of 30.4 C in July and 31.0 C in August (1991 to 2020 normals, airport station), and a two-site day puts the second site in the early afternoon. Travelers on forums say Herculaneum has more shade than Pompeii, but we found no official figure, so that is opinion. Small children, anyone slow on uneven stone and anyone who wants a long lunch should take one site and enjoy it; the Italy page sets out which one for whom.

Guided visits at Herculaneum are a different product

Herculaneum's own guided visits are fixed-departure in Italian, run through a concession, according to its official page. The English tours in this format are private operators' products, and it is worth finding out how many of the hours are guided at each site. The story of the town, and the closed Villa of the Papyri, are on the Herculaneum page.

Two price groups, and what sets them

The chart shows two groups: the 12 shared tours with a stated length at 63 to 254 EUR and the 7 private ones at 180 to 553 EUR. Inside the shared group the price follows the hours: four 6-hour tours at 63 to 100 EUR, median 81.50, and five 8-hour tours at 96 to 135. Then come the outliers: 165 EUR for 9 hours, 210 EUR for a 7-hour VIP tour with lunch and 254 EUR for the 11-hour day by train from Rome.

Chart of the prices of the 20 tours behind the Pompeii + Herculaneum page on pompeii.museum, median 150 EUR
19 of the 20 tours by length and price: shared and small-group (dots) from 63 to 254 EUR, private (diamonds) from 180 to 553. One tour has no stated length. · Pompeii Museum Editorial, from the prices of the tours listed on this site

Private tours behave the other way, and their unit is the first thing to check: Viator's unit field marks all seven private listings as per person, but the Private tours page found that field split 13 to 6 across the private Pompeii tours, so the cart should confirm whether a price is per person or per booking before it is set against a shared one.

A 4-hour private tour at 385 EUR costs more than every 8-hour shared tour.

The extra money probably buys a start time you choose and a slower pace.

Questions about Pompeii and Herculaneum tours

Is there a single ticket for Pompeii and Herculaneum?

We found no official joint ticket. The parks sell separately, the Pompeii ticket is named and tied to a slot, and the Herculaneum page we read mentions neither. Tours that bundle them buy two entries and charge for the guide; the worked example is in the first section.

Which site should I see first?

Pompeii, for most days. Its ticket has a slot, so it is the fixed half, and Herculaneum can absorb the rest of the hours. In summer you can reverse it, but then Pompeii lands in the afternoon slot, which has far fewer places.

Does a combined tour include lunch?

Some do: the Naples listings with lunch in the title run 6 to 8 hours and 96 to 100 EUR, and the lowest listing lists meals as not included. A lunch in the price is convenient, but it takes about half an hour of a winter day that has little to spare.

How long do these tours last?

The median is 7 hours, with a range of 4 to 11. The shortest, at 4 hours, is a private tour, most of the 6-hour ones are small groups with an archaeologist, and the 11-hour one starts in Rome by train.

Is it too much for one day?

In winter it is tight, and in August it is hot, with the second site in the early afternoon. It is a good day for a fit adult with a start at 9:00. If it sounds like too much, take one site.

Herculaneum

Herculaneum has its own page, with the dates, the closures and the ways to visit it alone.
