Private Pompeii and Herculaneum Tour by Minivan with Archaeologist and Hotel Pickup
A private minivan with a professional driver collects the group at the accommodation in Naples, Salerno, Sorrento or on the Amalfi Coast, and drops it back at the end. An archaeologist who is also a professional guide leads the walks. The itinerary may change.
Herculaneum comes first. It is smaller than Pompeii but much better preserved: buried under 20 metres of mud, it still has second floors, carbonised wooden objects, intact paintings and mosaics. Lunch between the two sites is on the group's own account, with no obligation to stop.
Pompeii allows a longer walk, through its streets, the most significant public buildings and private houses, with the guide's account of how the Romans lived there.

La Terrazza di M. Nonio Balbo
Marcus Nonius Balbus was the city's major benefactor, restoring and building many public buildings. At his death he was made patron and honoured, as the long inscription on his funeral altar records.
-
College of the Augustales
Thought to have been a centre of the cult of Emperor Augustus and the headquarters of the Collegium Augustalium, or possibly the local curia.
-
Central Thermae
Built around the start of the 1st century AD and divided, as was usual, into men's and women's baths with separate entrances.
-
House of the Telephus Relief
Possibly the home of Marcus Nonius Balbus, one of the town's leading benefactors. It is unusual for its own private access to the Suburban Thermae to the south.
-
House of the Skeleton
Probably three smaller buildings joined together. Human remains found in a second-floor room in 1831 gave it its name.
-
House of the Black Hall
One of Herculaneum's more luxurious mansions. Its monumental entrance still has the carbonised remains of the doorposts and lintel.
-
Partem Domus lignea - Casa del Tramezzo di Legno
Notable for the elegant wooden partition that survives.
-
Casa Sannitica
A layout typical of the Samnites, an ancient people of central Italy. A gallery with Ionic columns runs around the atrium, and the rooms have frescoes.
-
Casa del Bel Cortile
One of the most original houses in Herculaneum, with a courtyard, a stairway and a stone balcony instead of an atrium.
-
House of the Grand Portal
A fine domus in the centre of the site, with various rooms, colonnades, frescoes and charred remains of wooden parts. Drop-off at the accommodation in Naples, Salerno, Sorrento or the Amalfi Coast.
-
Archaeological Park of Pompeii
Free time for lunch on your own, then the tour continues in the Pompeii ruins.
