A professional archaeologist does the explaining on this tour, and priority access to both sites keeps the day moving. Help with the transfer between Pompeii and Herculaneum means nobody has to work out the connection alone.

The route runs through villas, temples, baths and well-preserved homes in two cities that Vesuvius destroyed in AD 79, with the guide covering history, architecture and daily life as the group goes.

Departures are possible from the Salerno and Naples cruise terminals, from Sorrento, from a hotel in Naples or from Pompeii itself. The drop-off point depends on the option chosen.

Salerno

Stazione Marittima di Salerno, 84121 Salerno SA, Italy

Salerno cruise terminal. The driver or guide waits where passengers disembark, holding a sign reading "MondoGuide". The tour returns to the port at the end.

  1. Archaeological Park of Pompeii

An ancient Roman city preserved by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. The guided visit lasts two and a half hours and covers its most famous areas and frescoes.

  2. Odeon - Teatro Piccolo

The small theatre of Pompeii, known as the Odeon.

  3. Teatro Grande

The Teatro Grande, the most important theatre in Pompeii.

  4. House of Menander

One of the richest and most magnificent houses in Pompeii for architecture, decoration and contents.

  5. Stabian Baths (Terme Stabiane)

A vast complex between the brothel lane, the Holconius crossroads and Via Stabiana, and the oldest bath complex in the city.

  6. Lupanar

The most famous brothel in the ruined city.

  7. Via dell'Abbondanza

    The main street of Pompeii.

  8. House of the Faun

One of the largest and most impressive private residences in Pompeii.

  9. Foro de Pompeya

The ancient main square of Pompeii.

  10. Basilica

An open portico that sheltered merchants and other activities.

  11. Archeological Park of Herculaneum

A quick lunch break is possible before the transfer, at the traveler's own expense. Then comes a two-hour guided visit of Herculaneum, where wooden structures, mosaics and everyday objects survived the eruption.

  12. House of the Stags

Named for the marble statues of stags found in the peristyle.

  13. La Terrazza di M. Nonio Balbo

Marcus Nonius Balbus was the city's major benefactor, restoring and building many public buildings. After his death he was made patron and honoured, as the long inscription on his funeral altar records.

  14. College of the Augustales

Thought to have been a centre of the cult of Emperor Augustus and the seat of the Collegium Augustalium, possibly even the local curia.

  15. Casa del Rilievo di Telefo

Possibly the home of Marcus Nonius Balbus, one of the town's leading benefactors. Unusually, it has its own private access to the Suburban Thermae to the south.

  16. Partem Domus lignea - Casa del Tramezzo di Legno

Notable for the elegant wooden partition that survives.

  17. House of the Skeleton

Probably three smaller buildings joined together. Human remains found in a second-floor room in 1831 gave it its name.

  18. Central Thermae

Built around the start of the 1st century AD and divided, as was usual, into men's and women's baths with separate entrances.

  19. Casa Sannitica

A layout typical of the Samnites, an ancient people of central Italy. A gallery with Ionic columns runs around the atrium, and the rooms have frescoes.

  20. Casa del Bel Cortile

One of the most original houses in Herculaneum, with a courtyard, a stairway and a stone balcony instead of an atrium.

  21. House of the Grand Portal

A fine domus in the centre of the site, with columns, frescoes and charred remains of wooden parts.
