Small-Group Pompeii and Herculaneum Tour from Sorrento or Naples with Skip-the-Line (5/5)

Departures run from Sorrento or Naples in air-conditioned transport, and the group stays small. The ride passes the Bay of Naples with Vesuvius in view, and the guides use the two sites to show how Romans lived before the eruption of 79 AD.

Entry skips the long lines, which leaves more of the day for walking through Pompeii and Herculaneum. The same eruption preserved the two cities in different ways, and seeing both gives a fuller picture of ancient Roman life than either alone.

Cruise passengers can join from the Naples and Salerno terminals, and travelers already in Pompeii can meet the guide there.

Via Molo Manfredi, Salerno

Via Molo Manfredi, 84121 Salerno SA, Italy

Salerno port. The driver or guide waits as passengers disembark, holding a sign reading "MondoGuide". The tour returns to the port at the end.

  1. Archaeological Park of Pompeii

The Roman city preserved by the Vesuvius eruption of 79 AD. The guided visit takes two and a half hours and covers the best-known areas and frescoes.

  2. Odeon - Teatro Piccolo

A look at the Teatro Piccolo of Pompeii, also called the Odeon.

  3. Teatro Grande

The most important theatre in Pompeii.

  4. House of Menander

One of the richest and most magnificent houses in ancient Pompeii, in architecture, decoration and contents.

  5. Stabian Baths (Terme Stabiane)

A vast complex between the brothel lane, the Holconius crossroads and Via Stabiana. It is the oldest bath complex in the city.

  6. Lupanar

The most famous brothel in the ruined Roman city.

  7. Via dell'Abbondanza

    The main street of Pompeii.

  8. House of the Faun

One of the largest and most impressive private homes in Pompeii.

  9. Foro de Pompeya

A look at the ancient main square of Pompeii.

  10. Basilica

An open portico that gave shelter to merchants and other activities.

  11. Archeological Park of Herculaneum

A quick lunch break is available before the transfer, at the traveler's own expense. After Pompeii, a two-hour guided visit of Herculaneum follows, where wooden structures, mosaics and everyday objects survived the eruption.

  12. House of the Stags

The house takes its name from marble statues of stags found in the peristyle.

  13. La Terrazza di M. Nonio Balbo

Marcus Nonius Balbus was the city's major benefactor and rebuilt or built many public buildings. On his death he was made patron and given many honours, listed in the long inscription on his funeral altar.

  14. College of the Augustales

Believed to have been a centre of the cult of Emperor Augustus and the headquarters of the Collegium Augustalium, or possibly the local curia.

  15. Casa del Rilievo di Telefo

The house possibly belonged to Marcus Nonius Balbus, one of the town's leading benefactors. It has its own private access to the adjoining Suburban Thermae to the south, which is unusual.

  16. Partem Domus lignea - Casa del Tramezzo di Legno

Important for the elegant wooden partition that has survived.

  17. House of the Skeleton

Probably formed from three smaller buildings. Its name comes from human remains found in a second-floor room in 1831.

  18. Central Thermae

Built around the beginning of the 1st century AD and, as was common, divided into men's and women's baths, each with its own entrance.

  19. Casa Sannitica

A layout typical of the Samnites, an ancient Sabine people of the central Italian mountains. A gallery with Ionic columns skirts the atrium, and the rooms are frescoed.

  20. Casa del Bel Cortile

One of the most original houses in Herculaneum: a courtyard with a stairway and a stone balcony replaces the atrium.

  21. House of the Grand Portal

A domus in the centre of the archaeological area with many rooms, colonnades and frescoes, and charred remains of wooden parts.
