Pompeii and Herculaneum Day Trip from Naples by Coach with Lunch and Audioguides
Two Roman towns, one day, and a clear contrast between them. Pompeii was a busy city and a gateway for merchants and travelers. Herculaneum, smaller, was closer to a residential town for aristocrats and intellectuals. Both were at their economic and social peak when Vesuvius buried them in 79 AD, and this trip visits them in turn, Pompeii in the morning and Herculaneum after lunch.
The coach leaves from several points in Naples, and a restaurant lunch breaks up the day. Drinks at the meal cost extra, and so do the entrance tickets for both sites. In Pompeii the visit runs on audioguides for small groups and with a licensed guide for larger ones. In Herculaneum everyone uses audioguides.

Archaeological Park of Pompeii
Pompeii had about 11,000 inhabitants and Herculaneum about 5,000 when several meters of ash buried the area in a few hours in 79 AD. Emperors and aristocrats had holiday villas here. Excavations began in 1748 under the Bourbons, and the finds helped inspire neoclassicism in Europe. The visit to the Pompeii excavations lasts about 2 hours, and if time allows there is a stop at a coral and cameo factory to watch artisans at work.

Archeological Park of Herculaneum
In the afternoon, a visit to the ruins of Herculaneum with audioguides. The site is known for the Villa dei Papiri, which held a library of over 1,800 papyri.
