Pompeii private tour: what it really costs, and for whom
20 private tours, 89 to 550 EUR. Of the 19 on Viator, 13 are priced per person and 6 per booking, so two similar numbers can mean very different bills.
Six of the 20 private tours in this catalogue are priced for the whole booking, 89 to 430 EUR, and thirteen are priced per person, 125 to 550 EUR. On one list they look like a single market, but the unit differs, so they are two, and with four people in the party the difference can outweigh the price itself. This page reads the unit first, then the entrance ticket, the group cap and what a party of two, four or six ends up paying. The guided tours page covers shared groups at the site, and the Pompeii page covers the site and its rules, so here we stay with what a private guide actually changes.
The 20 tours are 19 from Viator and 1 from Civitatis, sold by 16 operators and read on 4 November 2026. Six listings were read in full, in the providers' own data of the same day, and the rest were read from the catalogue's fields. The ticket price comes from the Parco Archeologico di Pompei. Where a page contradicts itself we say so and do not choose for you, and where a listing quotes a ticket price we compare it with the park's own figure. The unit comes from the provider's data field, and the title does not enter into it. Length runs from 1 to 12 hours, and 13 of the 20 are walks of three hours or less. The largest operator holds 25% of the reviews.

Ratings collected by Viator, Tripadvisor and Civitatis
Pompeii private tour prices: read the unit before the number
Viator tags every price as per person or per booking. Among the 19 private tours it carries, 13 are per person and 6 are for the booking: 89, 250, 300, 300, 310 and 430 EUR. Apart from the one-hour 89, they look expensive next to per-person prices of 125 to 219 EUR, but a booking takes a party. In the three we read in full a booking takes 8, 10 or 14 people, so a family of five at 300 EUR pays 60 EUR a head for the guide. The Civitatis listing, 190 EUR for four hours, reads as a booking price on its page, but the catalogue field does not carry a unit for it.
The park charges 20 EUR an adult for the Express ticket, whatever the guide costs.
Length against price, twenty marks
The chart plots each price as listed, so per-person and per-booking prices share one axis and one median line. The median, 230.6 EUR, is a median of that mix and not a price anyone pays. The note under the chart says "mostly per person; a few" price the whole group, and six of the 19 Viator listings is more than a few. The cluster at two hours has nine marks, from 125 to 310 EUR. The four highest marks between two and three hours, 250 to 310 EUR, are the four priced per booking, so the height of those marks is the unit and not the quality of the guide. The mark at one hour, 89 EUR, is also a booking price. To the right, the six listings at 7 to 12 hours are the days that add the Amalfi Coast, Sorrento or Positano, from 242 to 550 EUR, and three of them come from operators that look like car-hire or driver businesses.
What a private tour costs for two, four or six people
Take the two-hour walk in its two shapes. The four booking-priced listings between two and three hours have a median of 300 EUR. The eight per-person listings between two and three hours range from 125 to 219 EUR with a median of 176 EUR. Add the 20 EUR ticket for each adult and the bills diverge fast.
| Party of | Booking price, 300 EUR plus tickets | Per-person price, 176 EUR plus tickets |
|---|---|---|
| 2 adults | 340 EUR (170 each) | 392 EUR (196 each) |
| 4 adults | 380 EUR (95 each) | 784 EUR (196 each) |
| 6 adults | 420 EUR (70 each) | 1,176 EUR (196 each) |
A couple lands within about 50 EUR either way, so choose on the guide. From four people up, the booking price wins by a wide margin, unless the per-person price drops with the group. One per-person listing at 189.45 EUR says that its prices are based on the number of people and that it needs at least four participants, so the number on the card is a starting point. Check the price in the cart with your real party size. One Viator listing says children under 18 enter free; the park's price page does not repeat it, and we did not check the law, so count the ticket for every child until the operator confirms.
Is the 20 EUR ticket inside a private price?
In 8 of the 20 listings it is, and in 12 it is not. Of the six we opened in full, only one includes it. Here they are.
| Listed price | Priced per | Ticket in the price? | Group cap and meeting point |
|---|---|---|---|
| 89 EUR, 1 h | Booking | No; the text sends you to the park's online seller | Up to 14; Piazza Esedra |
| 147.50 EUR, 2 h | Person | Contradictory: the description says skip-the-line entrance is included, the exclusions list the ticket | Up to 15; Via Villa dei Misteri |
| 182.50 EUR, 2 h | Person | Yes, admission fees are listed as included | Up to 15; Via Villa dei Misteri 2 |
| 189.45 EUR, 2 h | Person, by group size | No | Up to 12, at least 4 required; "Pompei", no gate named |
| 300 EUR, 2 h | Booking | No | Up to 8; Coffee Shop Vittoria, Via Mare |
| 310 EUR, 2 h | Booking | No, though "skip the line" is in the title | Up to 10; Piazza Esedra |
The 310 EUR page says skip the line is included and, in its exclusions, that the ticket is not: the first means the operator emails a link to buy it in advance. The page also quotes the ticket at 19 EUR, and the park's Express price has been 20 EUR since 12 January 2026, so the text is out of date. Askos Tours sells a two-hour archaeologist walk at 147.50 EUR, where the description says skip-the-line entrance is included and the exclusions list the ticket, and another at 182.50 EUR with admission listed as included. If the ticket is out of the cheaper one, the gap is 35 EUR for a ticket that costs 20, and the listings do not say why.
Pompeii tickets are issued in the name of the person who enters.
What the guide changes
A private guide can choose which streets to take, and one listing promises to keep you away from the crowds, though the cap and the named ticket apply to your party as to everyone. One listing says you can stay on the site until closing time once the tour is over. The guide sets the order and the pace and leaves room for questions; the queue at the gate is the same. The street in the picture runs under an arch toward Vesuvius. The guided tours page prices the same walk shared with strangers.
Six levers on a private bill
| Lever | What the listings show | Effect on the bill |
|---|---|---|
| Unit | 13 per person, 6 per booking on Viator | Multiplies or divides the total by the size of the party |
| Length | 89 EUR for 1 h; 125 to 310 EUR for 2 h; 212 and 250 EUR for 3 h (units mixed) | Weaker than expected: a 3 h booking at 250 EUR costs less than a 2 h one at 310 |
| Ticket | In the price for 8 of 20 | Add 20 EUR an adult where it is not |
| Guide's title | Half the listings say archaeologist | No pattern: 148 EUR per person and 310 EUR per booking both buy two hours with one |
| Language | From 2 to 9 languages in the six we opened | No visible pattern: nine languages at 182.50 EUR, two at 310 |
| Transport | 6 days with the coast, 7 to 12 h | Car and driver time, 242 to 550 EUR |
The ratings barely help. Eighteen of the 20 score 4.9 or 5.0, and the weighted score is 4.82 on 7,684 reviews. The listing with the most reviews, 1,888, is an 11-hour day from Rome and scores 4.4, the lowest of the 20. A near-perfect score on 150 reviews does not separate one guide from another.
What a private guide cannot open
The park keeps the rules and the closures, and a private tour cannot buy around them. The park's list of 4 November has several areas closed or partly closed, and the Pompeii page lists them. One listing's off-the-beaten-paths option names the Antiquarium among its new openings, so if you book it, ask what replaces that stop. The named ticket and the daily cap apply to a party of two in the same way as to a coach. Before you pay, ask which route the guide takes and what the plan is for each stop that is closed.
Who a private tour is for, and who should share
It suits a family of four or more at a booking price, a party with a child who will not stand in a group, anyone who wants the tour in German, Japanese or Polish (the 182.50 EUR listing offers nine languages), and visitors with reduced mobility who need the guide to plan the route. Four of the listings we opened flag themselves as wheelchair accessible, and another asks you to say beforehand. A couple with no special needs will find a small group at 30 to 60 EUR per person does most of the job. For two people, 340 EUR buys the pace of the walk; the ruins cost the same 20 EUR a head.
For a day that also covers the coast, the Pompeii and Amalfi Coast page weighs hours on the road against hours on the site.
Questions about private tours at Pompeii
How much is a private tour of Pompeii?
The short walks of up to three hours cost 125 to 219 EUR per person in 8 listings (median 176) or 250 to 310 EUR for the whole booking in 4 (median 300), plus 20 EUR a ticket if it is not included. A one-hour booking is 89 EUR. Days with the coast cost 242 to 550 EUR.
Is the price per person or per group?
It depends on the listing. On Viator 13 of the 19 private tours are per person and 6 per booking, with caps from 8 to 15 people in the ones we read. The card shows which. A per-person price may also depend on party size, as one listing at 189.45 EUR states.
Does a private tour include the ticket?
In 8 of the 20 listings, and in one of the six we opened in full. Check the inclusions and the exclusions: one page lists skip-the-line entrance as included and the ticket as excluded, which are two different things.
How many people can join?
The six pages we opened cap a booking at 8, 10, 12, 14 or 15. One asks for at least four. The park's group ticket starts at five people, so as we read the rule a smaller party buys single tickets.
Is a private guide worth it with children or limited mobility?
Often, because the route can follow you. Four listings we opened say they are wheelchair accessible, one says it could be suitable if notified in advance, and the park runs a Pompeii for all route from Piazza Anfiteatro. Ask before you book.
Does a private guide get you past the queue?
No. The ticket is named and tied to a slot, and the cap of 20,000 a day applies to everybody. In these listings skip the line means you buy the ticket ahead, usually through a link the operator sends.
