The format is private and flexible: a licensed, insured, air-conditioned minivan and an English-speaking driver-guide who keeps the plan loose. Time in each town is spent on what you choose, whether that is a pizza, a coastal walk or the shops. The route stays clear of the worst of the traffic and the crowds.

The day covers Pompeii, Sorrento and Positano along the Amalfi Coast road, with photo stops on the way. Sorrento and Positano are free-time stops, with gelato, limoncello, ceramics and leather goods in Sorrento and boutiques, terraces and the beach in Positano.

At Pompeii the site is explored at your own pace. A private tour with a licensed national archaeological guide, and skip-the-line tickets, can be arranged on request. Neither is in the base price.
