Pompeii and Amalfi Coast day trip: two itineraries in one day

20 tours, a median of 130 EUR and 10 hours. A shared day is about 8 hours from Naples and about 12 from Rome, and forums tell people to pick one.

The median Pompeii and Amalfi Coast tour takes 10 hours, and that figure hides two different days. Every shared tour we could place from its title takes 8 hours when it starts in Naples or Salerno and 11 to 13 when it starts in Rome, and both are sold under the same name. Give Pompeii two hours and the rest is road, coastal stops and lunch. Forum threads tell people to pick one, and the most-reviewed listing on this page, a Pompeii and Amalfi Coast day trip, does both in 13 hours from Rome. Pompeii's own rules and history are on the Pompeii page.

The 20 tours are 17 listings on Viator, two on Civitatis and one on Tiqets, read on 4 November 2026, with 23,352 reviews at a weighted 4.63. Nine of the 20 offer a pickup, eight list an entrance ticket as included, and seven name an archaeologist as the guide. None goes to Capri: the coast here means minibus stops and a town for lunch, not a day on the water. The price runs from the 12-hour 54 EUR day from Rome to a 550 EUR private day, and the hours on the coach explain more of it than the title does.

Two facts shape the day before any stop is chosen. The coastal road, the SS163, has one lane each way, and positano.com, itself a commercial site, calls the afternoon stretch back toward Sorrento the worst. From 15 October Pompeii's last entry is 15:30, so a winter day has less margin for that traffic, which is heaviest in spring and summer, especially at weekends.

If one of the two sights is enough, the pages for Pompeii tours from Rome and from Naples and Sorrento are the places to compare before you commit a day to both.

Why people say to pick one

The advice on forums is close to unanimous. In the six forum threads we read (Rick Steves, Cruise Critic and TripAdvisor), the answer to "Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast in one day?" was no, or pick one. A reply on the Rick Steves forum in July 2026, in a thread about a cruise stop at Salerno, put it flatly:

"No. The Amalfi Coast can become one large traffic jam."

In that thread five of the six people who named a choice picked Pompeii. A 2020 Rick Steves poster counted 4.5 hours of a 9-hour tour from Sorrento spent in the car. A 2024 Cruise Critic poster described an excursion that gave Pompeii 90 minutes and called that "pretty limited". These are forum posts, not measurements. We found no study of how tiring the day is. The posts keep blaming the same thing: one coastal road, worse in summer.

The forum against the best-seller

The people who book do not follow the forum. The listing with the most reviews on this page is a 13-hour day from Rome at 109 EUR, with 7,271 reviews at 4.5, nearly a third of the 23,352 on the page. Weighted by reviews, by our calculation, the five shared tours from Naples or Salerno score 4.76 on 5,983 reviews and the seven from Rome 4.59 on 13,173. Buyers rate the 8-hour day higher, which is what the forum would predict. The best-seller shows the compromise suits some buyers. The 8-hour day from Naples is the lower-risk choice.

What the day is made of

Lengths from the 20 tours read on 4 November 2026, by the city in the title. The 2 hours at Pompeii is an assumption, not a listing figure.
Starts from Tours placed Length Left after 2 h at Pompeii
Naples or Salerno, shared58 hAbout 6 h
Naples or Salerno, private27 to 8 h5 to 6 h
Rome, shared711 to 13 h, median 12About 10 h
Rome, private211 to 12 h9 to 10 h

The last column is where the day goes. Naples to Pompeii is 30 to 60 minutes by car, and Pompeii to Positano about an hour, a figure from a tour seller, because no official time was found. One operator, Leisure Italy, puts the drive from the coast back to Naples at up to two hours. From Rome there is the trip south as well, which is why the Rome days run to 13 hours.

The town of Sorrento on the coast of the Sorrento Peninsula, Italy

Sorrento, the stop that appears most

Sorrento is named in 9 of the 20 titles, against 6 for Positano, and the photograph shows its small harbour and the coloured bathing huts below the cliff. One Rome listing builds its day around a lunch there. Third-party sources put it about 30 minutes from Pompeii on the Circumvesuviana, which is the train people take when they do the same day on their own.

Where the minibus actually stops

What the titles name, and what one listing says the stop is. The listing is the Civitatis day trip, 100 EUR, 9 hours, 563 reviews.
Stop Titles that name it What the listing says it is
PompeiiAll 20 by categoryEntry with skip-the-line access; a live guide only with six or more people of the same language, an audio guide otherwise
Positano6 of 20A viewpoint, which the operator may swap for Agerola
AmalfiThe coast in 15 titles, the town in noneFree time
Sorrento9 of 20Not on this route; another listing, from Rome, has lunch there

The Civitatis day trip shows how the 8 to 9 hours are laid out. It leaves Molo Beverello at 8:00 or the Starhotels Terminus at 8:30, drives the coast with photo stops, gives free time in Amalfi, offers a lunch and a limoncello tasting, and finishes with Pompeii before the return. The listing gives no time per stop, so the operator has to be asked.

A 2024 Cruise Critic post says large ship coaches do not go down to Positano and make a photo stop from above. A title that names Positano can mean a photo stop from the coach. Check how many minutes you get on the ground.

Map: Pompeii plus the Amalfi Coast and Capri in one day
Naples, Sorrento and Salerno as departure points, with Pompeii, Positano and Amalfi as the stops. Rome is off the map. · Pompeii Museum Editorial. Map data: Natural Earth, public domain

On the map Pompeii and Amalfi are about 16 km apart in a straight line, by our calculation from approximate coordinates. The road is far longer than the line, and that is where the hours go.

Low ruined walls of Pompeii under a cloudy sky with Mount Vesuvius on the horizon

Pompeii is the half you cannot shorten

Pompeii is a city seen at ground level over a long walk, and the low walls in the photograph, under cloud with Vesuvius on the horizon, are most of it. A guided visit of two hours is a sample. As of November 2026 entry is named and timed, and the Pompeii page has the rules. Eight of the 20 listings are flagged as including the ticket; check that line before you book.

Why the coach hours set the price

Chart of the prices of the 20 tours behind the Pompeii + Amalfi Coast page on pompeii.museum, median 130 EUR
Length against price for the 20 tours. Twelve of the 14 shared tours cost 149 EUR or less; the six private ones cost 242 to 550 EUR. · Pompeii Museum Editorial, from the prices of the tours listed on this site

The cheapest tours are the longest.

The 54 EUR listing runs 12 hours, which is 4.50 EUR an hour.

Two others, at 69 and 76 EUR, run 13 and 12 hours. Among shared tours the median is 109 EUR from Rome and 100 EUR from Naples or Salerno, so the extra four hours on the bus cost about nine euros more at the median. The six private tours run from 242 to 550 EUR. Five are priced per person and one per group, so check the unit before you divide. A private day gets you a vehicle and a timetable you can move. Pompeii still gets the same two hours.

Three ways to fit the coast into a Pompeii trip

Our own suggestions, not official advice. The hours are the catalogue's; the rest is judgement.
Option What you do Time Suits
Two daysBase yourself in Sorrento, Pompeii on one day and the coast on the otherTwo shorter daysAnyone with a second day
One townPompeii in the first slot of the morning, then Positano or Amalfi, not both7 to 8 h from NaplesA single day and a tolerance for the coach
Pick onePompeii if you like history, the coast if you do notWhatever you chooseCruise passengers, by the forum count

If you take the single day, start from Naples or Salerno rather than Rome, and ask how long the Positano stop lasts, whether the guide is live, and whether the ticket is in the price. The From Rome page reads the long days, and the Naples and Sorrento page the short ones.

Capri needs a day of its own

None of the 20 tours stops on Capri, and the island needs a boat of its own. Caremar's timetable, read on 4 November 2026, gives the fast boat from Naples to Capri 52 to 57 minutes and the slower ferry 1 h 17 to 1 h 27, and its winter timetable starts that same day, with fast departures from Naples at 5:35, 12:00 and 17:25. From Sorrento the fast boat takes 22 to 32 minutes. The static timetable lists 7:45, 9:25, 14:40 and 19:25, but the live board showed an extra 8:40 sailing, so treat the table as incomplete. Boats back to Sorrento leave Capri at 7:00, 13:35 and 18:40, and the 13:35 carries an old Covid-era note that needs confirming.

By our sum of those times, Pompeii in the morning and the 14:40 boat from Sorrento would leave about three and a half hours on the island before the last return at 18:40. The Blue Grotto closes in rough seas or strong wind, so nothing on this page promises it. The boats between Sorrento and Positano or Amalfi are seasonal, from April to October according to an aggregator, while the Naples and Sorrento boats to Capri run all year. For the long days that start in Rome, the From Rome page reads the coach hours, and the private tours page prices a driver for the day.

Questions about the Pompeii and Amalfi Coast day trip

Can I do Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast in one day?

Yes, and the 20 tours here do it, in 7 to 13 hours. Forum posters mostly say not to. Pick one, or take Pompeii and a single town, and start from Naples or Salerno: the Rome days are 11 to 13 hours, and the extra time is on the coach.

Does the tour go to Capri?

None of the 20 does. Capri is an island reached by a separate boat, and no title or listing we read includes a stop there. The coast in these tours is Sorrento, Positano and Amalfi, by road.

Is the guide live or an audio guide?

It varies, and it is worth asking. The Civitatis listing gives a live guide only with six or more people of the same language and an audio guide otherwise. Seven of the 20 name an archaeologist as the guide, which is the better sign.

Is the ticket for Pompeii included?

In eight of the 20, as the listings are flagged. Pompeii tickets are named and timed, so a tour that leaves the ticket out leaves you to buy one yourself.

Is it better from Rome or from Naples?

From Naples or Salerno, by the numbers. The shared day is 8 hours against 12 from Rome, the median price is 100 EUR against 109, and the reviews weighted by count are 4.76 against 4.59. Rome makes sense only if you have no night in Campania. Then it is a 12-hour day and a lot of coach.

Is a private day worth the money?

For a family or a small group that wants to move the timetable, perhaps. The six private tours cost 242 to 550 EUR and last 7 to 12 hours. The road is still the same road.

Which month is best?

No month is clean, and we found no data that ranks them. July and August add heat to the Pompeii walk and traffic to the coast road. November is the wettest month in Naples, about 152 mm over 10 days, with fewer sailings and more cancellations, according to an aggregator. The boats between Sorrento and Positano or Amalfi run from April to October, and from 15 October Pompeii's last entry is 15:30.

Pompeii from Naples and Sorrento

The shorter version of the day: 20 tours from a median of 75.3 EUR, with the train and the three stops called Pompei set out line by line.
