A full day that ends with lunch on the slopes of Vesuvius. The ruins come first: an authorized guide takes the group into the streets of Pompeii and Herculaneum, both buried by the 79 AD eruption and preserved almost intact under volcanic ash. Visitors can step inside houses, toilets and restaurants of the Roman towns.

The transfer is by air-conditioned semi-private minibus from Sorrento or Naples, with entrance reserved at both sites and headphones for every passenger. The meal is a light lunch of local products in a traditional restaurant. Sorrento departures have a fixed meeting time of 8:15 am on Mondays, Thursdays and Sundays. Timings can shift with local traffic.

  1. Archaeological Park of Pompeii

Pompeii is a vast archaeological site near the Gulf of Naples. The Roman city was buried under meters of ash and pumice in 79 AD, and its excavated streets and houses can be explored.

  2. Foro de Pompeya

The Forum was the center of daily life. The main public buildings for administration, justice and commerce, including the markets, overlook it, together with the main places of worship.

  3. Tempio di Giove Capitolino

The Temple of Jupiter stands on the northern side of the Forum with Vesuvius behind it. Renovated after the colony was founded in 80 BC, it became a Capitolium, with statues of Jupiter, Juno and Minerva on a high base so people crossing the Forum could see them.

  4. Macellum

The Macellum was the city food market, north-east of the Forum. It is a tuff quadriporticus with a hall for worship on the eastern side. Its porticoes were decorated with scenes of daily life, such as selling fish and poultry, and with mythological subjects.

  5. Via dell’Abbondanza

One of the main streets of ancient Pompeii, connecting the Forum with the Amphitheatre.

  6. Stabian Baths (Terme Stabiane)

Built in stages from the 4th century BC and rebuilt in the 2nd century BC. A large courtyard leads to the pool and to a colonnade giving access to the men's quarters (apodyterium, frigidarium, tepidarium, calidarium). The women's quarters follow the same plan on a smaller scale, with less decoration. Hot air circulated through pipes in the walls and double floors. People also talked politics and trials here.

  7. Lupanar

The brothel is one of the best-known buildings of the excavations, with erotic paintings. The prostitutes were mostly Greek and Oriental slaves. Five rooms with built-in beds are on the ground floor, and the homes of the owner and the slaves are upstairs. The name comes from lupa, Latin for prostitute.

  8. Teatro Grande

Built around the middle of the 2nd century BC and substantially restored in the Roman style, the theatre staged Greek and Roman comedies and tragedies. It was the first large public building completely cleared of eruption deposits.

  9. Casa del Salone Nero

The house is named for its party hall, painted entirely in black with geometric patterns. Waxed tablets found here belonged to L. Venidius Ennychus, thought to be the owner, and record a bid for the Augustale, the purchase of a slave and the birth of a daughter.

  10. Archeological Park of Herculaneum

Herculaneum is a smaller Roman city near the Gulf of Naples, buried under meters of ash and pumice in 79 AD. Excavated streets, houses and villas are preserved in remarkable condition.

  11. House of the Stags

This house with a sea-view terrace belonged to Q. Granius Verus, a slave freed shortly before Herculaneum was destroyed. It is named after two statues in the garden of deer attacked by dogs.

  12. Casa di Nettuno e Anfitrite

Glass-paste mosaics, very expensive at the time, show floral and hunting scenes. The central one shows Neptune and Amphitrite, the sea god and his wife.

  13. Skeleton House

Probably formed by joining three smaller buildings, it takes its name from human remains found in a second-floor room in 1831.

  14. Sacellum of the Augustales

Built near the forum while Emperor Augustus was alive and in power, this square building keeps fine frescoes of Hercules entering Olympus with Jupiter, Juno and Minerva, and of Hercules against Achelous. The skeleton of the caretaker was found lying on the bed in his room.

  15. House of the Hotel

A Roman house on the edge of the hill, buried in the 79 AD eruption. At 2,250 square meters it is the largest house found so far in Herculaneum and the only one with a baths area, which is why it was first taken for a hotel.
