Pompeii shore excursions from Naples and Salerno cruise ports
20 excursions read one by one: 11 shared at 84 to 130 EUR, 9 private at 200 to 560, and a table that works backward from the all-aboard time.
A cruise stop at Naples or Salerno gives you a fixed number of hours, and a Pompeii shore excursion spends a good part of them on a road. Of the 20 listings on this page, 11 are shared or small-group at 84 to 130 EUR and 9 are private at 200 to 560 EUR, all read on 4 November 2026. The shared ones run 3 to 8 hours and the private ones reach 9. What separates them is the schedule: when the bus leaves, when it is back and who answers if it is late. Three different things are sold as a guaranteed return, and the two ports behave differently. How Pompeii itself works inside the gates is on the Pompeii page.
All 20 excursions are on Viator, with prices shown per person, and ratings are weighted by the number of reviews, so the 4.71 leans toward the listings that have the most of them. Sailing times, ship lines and park rules change, which is why each fact below carries its date. The all-aboard time is the one number this page cannot give you: it is printed on your own itinerary and nowhere else, and everything after it is arithmetic you can do yourself. The shared listings carry 91% of the reviews, so the evidence behind the private prices is thinner than the prices suggest.

Return guaranteed: three promises under one phrase
Listings use the phrase freely, and it covers at least three different things. The first is the ship's own excursion. Cruise lines are quoted as saying that the ship does not wait for passengers who are late, unless they booked one of the line's own tours. We read that in a guarantee page of an independent operator that repeats the rule, not in a cruise line's policy, so your line's own terms are the ones that count. The second is a contract: an operator commits in writing to pay for the transfer to the next port if its own delay makes you miss the ship. The third is a timetable built to be back in time, which is a plan and not a promise.
| Promise | Who stands behind it | What to look for | What it does not mean |
|---|---|---|---|
| The ship's own excursion | The cruise line | The line's rule, in its own terms | Not a price comparison; we did not compare line prices |
| A written guarantee from an independent operator | The operator, by contract | The clause: what it pays, and what it excludes | Not every listing from one marketplace carries it |
| A tour timed to the ship | Nobody | Departure and return times on the voucher | Nothing happens if traffic eats the margin |
A label can say worry-free while the terms refuse a refund. A reseller site that reproduces Viator listings showed a worry-free label and, in the same listing, a line saying that nothing is refunded if the ship arrives late or does not arrive. We could not confirm that wording on Viator itself, so the terms of the tour you book are the ones to read. The Naples listing we opened in full is a 5-hour tour at 84.15 EUR with a 2.5-hour guided visit. It covers lateness at the meeting point and says nothing about a late ship.
The Naples listing read in full: be at the meeting point 15 minutes early, no refund if you miss the departure, free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
None of the three replaces your itinerary: the all-aboard time printed there is what the clause, the contract or the timetable has to fit.
Two ports, two different problems
The map shows why the two ports behave differently. Naples is to the north-west, Herculaneum sits on the coast between Naples and Pompeii, and Salerno lies to the south-east, on the other side of the base of the Sorrento peninsula. Road distances are the weak spot: we found no official measure for either port. Blogs and operators give about 25 to 27 km and 30 to 60 minutes from Naples. For Salerno the figures disagree, from about 30 minutes in an operator's text to 55 to 70 in a taxi guide, so neither is given here as fact.
| Naples | Salerno | |
|---|---|---|
| Listings naming the port | 11: 5 shared, 6 private | 5: 4 shared, 1 private; 1 more names both, 3 name neither |
| Shared price range | 84 to 130 EUR | 86 to 130 EUR |
| Private price range | 200 to 560 EUR | 479 EUR, one listing |
| Length of shared listings | 5 to 8 hours | 3 to 8 hours |
| Pier to Pompeii by road | 25 to 27 km, 30 to 60 minutes (blogs, not official) | No agreed figure, from 30 minutes to over an hour |
| Pier to the train station | Taxi to Napoli Centrale, 8 to 10 EUR in one blog | 25 to 30 minutes on foot, or about 10 by taxi or bus (a port guide) |
Naples: the port is part of the city
Naples has a mainline station and the Circumvesuviana in the same city, which leaves more options if plans change than Salerno does. The port is seen here from the Castel dell'Ovo embankment, with the quays at the far end. The listing we opened includes pickup and drop-off at the port, and its coordinator waits in front of a snack bar called Meeting Point.
Operators ask for the ship's name and, in several listings, for the docking and sailing times when you book.
Working backward from the all-aboard time
Take the all-aboard time from your itinerary, subtract a margin, then subtract the length of the tour. What remains is the latest the tour can leave the pier. The margin here is 90 minutes, the top of the 60 to 90 that a third-party port guide advises for being back before the ship sails; that guide counts from sailing and the table counts from all-aboard, so it errs on the safe side. The table uses two example all-aboard times, 17:00 and 18:00. They are invented for the arithmetic and are not any ship's schedule; yours is on your cruise card.
| Tour length | Example: all aboard 17:00 | Example: all aboard 18:00 |
|---|---|---|
| 3 hours, the shortest listing | 12:30 | 13:30 |
| 5 hours, the Naples and Salerno guided visits | 10:30 | 11:30 |
| 8 hours, with Sorrento or the coast | 07:30 | 08:30 |
| 9 hours, the longest listing | 06:30 | 07:30 |
The bottom rows only work if the ship is already alongside when the tour starts, which is why listings ask for the docking time. A late-afternoon sailing helps the long tours. In winter there is a second limit: from 15 October to 15 March Pompeii's last entry is 15:30 and the park closes at 17:00 (park website, as of November 2026), so a tour that starts late stalls at the gate rather than at the ship.
A noon sailing rules out all but the shortest tour.
What is written in the 20 listings
| Listing says | Of 20 | Reading it |
|---|---|---|
| Pompeii ticket included | 14 | Which time slot it is for, since the ticket is named and tied to a slot |
| An archaeologist guides | 14 | A licensed archaeologist is not the same as a guide; see the guided tours page |
| Pickup or drop-off at the port or hotel | 11 | The part that makes it a shore excursion |
| Goes on to Sorrento or the Amalfi Coast | 10 | The reason a day runs 7 to 9 hours |
| Adds Mount Vesuvius | 4 | Stretches the day further; see the Vesuvius page |
| Skip-the-line wording | 3 | A label; we found no skip-the-line service in the park's own rules, only a cap and time slots |
| Lunch included | 3 | Most do not include food |
| Wine tasting | 2 | A different kind of port day |
Sorrento is the stop that stretches the day
Ten of the 20 excursions add Sorrento, Positano or the Amalfi Coast to Pompeii, and the shared ones of 7 to 8 hours cost 90 to 130 EUR. On a port day we would pick one of those towns and not all three. Every extra stop comes out of your margin before the ship sails.
If you want the coast, the Pompeii and Amalfi Coast page reads those tours one by one.
Why a private excursion costs 3.9 times a shared one
The chart shows two clouds of dots. The 11 shared listings sit between 84 and 130 EUR whether they last 3 hours or 8: a 5-hour shared tour at 86 EUR and an 8-hour one with Sorrento at 90 EUR are 4 euros apart. The 9 private listings sit between 200 and 560 EUR and the length hardly matters. At the median a private excursion is 3.9 times a shared one, 472 EUR against 120.
The data labels all 20 prices as per person, and the chart's own footnote says a few private listings price the whole group. The group size on the listing comes before any division. The evidence is also thin where the price is high: the 11 shared listings hold 3,132 of the 3,459 reviews, 91%, and the 9 private ones 327 together.
On your own, or on an excursion
From Naples the do-it-yourself route is a taxi to Napoli Centrale, the Circumvesuviana to the Pompei Scavi stop and a booked Pompeii ticket, all done before the ship's margin runs out. The Naples and Sorrento page has the stations. One date matters in November 2026: the ministry's strike notice lists EAV, the Circumvesuviana's operator, in the rail strike of 20 to 21 November 2026. A ship that calls on those days may lose the cheapest way to Pompeii. From Salerno we would not improvise it at all.
Questions about Pompeii shore excursions
Will the ship wait if my tour runs late?
Reliably only for the line's own excursions, and only if the line says so in its terms. For anything else, the rule quoted by operators is that the ship sails on time. The clause is on the listing, and the 60 to 90 minute margin that one port guide recommends is worth keeping.
How long should a Pompeii shore excursion be?
Listings run from 3 to 9 hours. The Naples guided visit is 5 hours with 2.5 hours at the site, a Salerno small-group listing is 3 hours, and tours that add Sorrento or the Amalfi Coast run 7 to 9. Your itinerary says how long you are in port; start there.
Is a private shore excursion worth 472 EUR?
At the median it costs 3.9 times a shared one. It buys your own start time and pace, not extra hours in the site. Check whether the price is per person or for the whole group, since listings differ, and check what the operator does if the ship is delayed.
Can I book from Salerno for Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast?
Yes. Three of the six Salerno-linked listings add the coast: two shared at 120 and 130 EUR for 8 hours, and one private at 479 EUR. Only one of the listings naming Salerno is private, so the choice is narrower than from Naples.
What do I give the operator when I book?
The ship's name at least. The Naples listing we opened asks for it, and other listings ask for the docking and sailing times too. Without them the operator cannot build the return around your ship.

The Naples and Sorrento page compares the train with a tour and lists the stations.
