Santa Luciella ai Librai is a small church that most visitors to Naples walk past. Its basement cemetery holds the "Skull with Ears", the best known object of the cult of the Souls in Purgatory, whose devotees are called Pezzentelle. The visit lasts 30 minutes, short enough to fit between larger sights.

Tickets also support a social project run by the Respiriamo Arte Association, the group whose work recovered the church and reopened it to the public. It shows a side of Naples that has little to do with the usual archaeology.

The tour begins and ends at the church.

  2. Chiesa Museo di Santa Luciella ai Librai

Founded by Bartolomeo Di Capua in 1327, the church was the place of worship of the Corporation of Pipernieri, Fabricators and Sawyers, who asked Santa Lucia to protect eyesight put at risk by their trades. The Respiriamo Arte Association saved and restored it, and it is open again. In the underground cemetery, among many skulls, is the "Skull with Ears", a focus of the Pezzentelle cult. Neapolitans addressed their prayers to it, hoping it would carry them to the afterlife.
