The way in is a staircase that drops more than 40 meters below the Spanish Quarter. At the bottom is a maze of tunnels and cisterns more than 2,400 years old, dating to the Greco-Roman period, which once supplied water to the people of the city.

The passages were later used as a dumping ground, so the guide points out old furnishings and 19th-century objects left there, and tells the legends attached to the tunnels. In World War II the same space served as an air-raid shelter.

The tour starts at Vico Sant'Anna di Palazzo 52, lasts about an hour, and comes back up near Via Chiaia, a short walk from the start.
