Private Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius Day Tour from Positano with Skip-the-Line Entry
Everything in this day belongs to one party: a private vehicle with an English-speaking driver from the hotel in Positano, a licensed private guide at Pompeii, and a pace set by the group rather than by a schedule. Entry to Pompeii is skip-the-line, so the time goes on the ruins and not on the queue.
The guide takes the ruins first, from the Forum to the baths, the Lupanar and the House of the Faun. Afterwards the driver heads up Vesuvius and drops the group at about 1,000 m, from where a path leads to the crater rim at 1,280 m. The surface is uneven.
Lunch is not included. A booking takes up to seven travelers, which keeps the day a private one.

Archaeological Park of Pompeii
Pompeii lies on the Bay of Naples in Campania. The Roman city was buried under meters of ash and pumice by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Its excavated streets and houses can be explored on foot.
-
Foro de Pompeya
The Forum was the central square of Pompeii, a market and trading hub with strong ties to politics.
-
Tempio di Giove Capitolino
The Capitolium was the temple of Jupiter, Juno and Minerva, overlooked by Vesuvius. Its statues stood high enough to be seen from the Forum, as in the Capitolium of ancient Rome.
-
Macellum
The Macellum was the provisions market of Pompeii, on the Forum, and was built in several phases. The earthquake of 62 CE damaged it along with much of the city.
-
Via dell’Abbondanza
Via dell'Abbondanza was the main street of Pompeii, running east to west from the Forum to the Porta Sarno. Shops, workshops (officinae), cafes, snack bars and restaurants made it crowded and noisy.
-
Stabian Baths (Terme Stabiane)
The Forum Baths lie behind the Temple of Jupiter and date from just after Sulla founded the veteran colony (80 BC). Women and men had separate entrances. The men's section has a changing room that doubled as a tepidarium, a cold room and a hot room. The earthquake of 62 AD damaged the baths heavily.
-
Lupanar
The Lupanar, also called Lupanare Grande, is the most famous brothel in Pompeii (the word is Latin for brothel). Erotic paintings cover its walls.
-
Casa del Fauno
The House of the Faun fills an entire city block and is among the largest and richest homes in Pompeii. It is named after the bronze dancing faun in its atrium and is best known for the Alexander Mosaic, which shows Alexander the Great against Darius III of Persia. It has two peristyle gardens and floor mosaics. The owner was Quintus Poppaeus Sabinus, of the family of Empress Poppea Sabina, Nero's second wife.
-
Teatro Grande
The Teatro Grande was built into a hillside, using the natural hollow for an auditorium of five sectors. Greco-Roman tragedies were staged here.
-
Basilica
The Basilica was the grandest building on the Forum, used for business and for the administration of justice.
-
Vesuvius National Park
The path ends at the crater edge, 1,280 m up, with a panorama over the Gulf of Naples. The surface is uneven. After the devastating eruption the volcano was named after Vulcan, the Roman god of fire and metalworking.
-
Vesuvius National Park
Drop-off is at 1,000 m on the volcano. Vesuvius is a somma-stratovolcano on the Gulf of Naples, about 9 km east of Naples, joined to Monte Somma. Its 79 AD eruption destroyed Pompeii and Herculaneum. It is counted among the most dangerous volcanoes in the world, and scientists monitor it around the clock.
