Storytelling is what this private tour sells. The licensed guides talk through the sights and daily life of the ancient city instead of reciting dates, and the pace follows the group's interests. Certified guides use a fast-track line at the entrance, so less of the visit goes on queuing.

Families with children aged 6 to 11 can add a kids option. The route stays the same, but the guide is trained for children and the group gets activities, games, a map with stickers and a Pompeii4kids activity book.

The walk covers the Forum, the Bath-House, shops, streets and private homes, with an introduction to the eruption of Mount Vesuvius that buried the city 2,000 years ago. Bakeries and the place where gladiators trained are on the route, and colourful wall paintings and floor mosaics give photographers plenty to shoot.

  1. Via Villa dei Misteri, 2, Pompei

In front of Cafè Hortus Pompeii, Piazza Porta Marina Superiore 1, Pompei. The guide holds a sign with the booking name. The site has several separate entrances; the gate for this tour is Porta Marina Superiore.

  2. Archaeological Park of Pompeii

A private guide shows the highlights: the Forum, the Bath-House, shops, streets and private homes, with an introduction to the eruption of Vesuvius. The family option for children aged 6 to 11 adds activities, games and a sticker map. Admission fees are not included, but certified guides use a fast-track line and can buy tickets on the spot.

  3. The Forum

The primary political, religious and commercial centre of the ancient city, a rectangular pedestrian plaza of roughly 157 by 38 metres, closed to chariot traffic.

  4. Via dell’Abbondanza

The longest and most important street in Pompeii, the commercial and social artery of the city, running from the Forum to the Sarno Gate.

  5. Terme del Foro

A well-preserved public bath complex behind the Temple of Jupiter, built around 80 BC and the only baths still operating in 79 AD. The rooms follow the Roman bathing sequence: changing room, cold bath, warm room, hot room. Barrel-vaulted ceilings carry stucco reliefs and terracotta telamones.

  6. Temple of Apollo

One of the oldest religious sites in Pompeii, dating to the 6th century BC, with an elevated podium, a 48-column portico and a mix of Greek and Italic styles. Bronze replicas of Apollo as an archer and his twin Diana stand here; the originals are in the National Archaeological Museum in Naples.

  7. The Basilica

The most imposing public building in Pompeii, in the southwestern corner of the Forum and dating to the 2nd century BC, one of the oldest of its kind in the Roman world.

  8. Casa dei Vettii

Called the Sistine Chapel of Pompeii and reopened in 2023 after a 20-year restoration. It belonged to Aulus Vettius Conviva and Aulus Vettius Restitutus, two freedmen turned wealthy wine merchants who built it to show off their status.

  9. Teatro Grande

One of the world's oldest surviving masonry theatres, built in the 2nd century BC and cut into a natural lava hillside, showing the shift from Greek to Roman design.

  10. The Antiquarium

The site's main museum, a climate-controlled space for the most fragile finds. It displays plaster casts of victims, including small children, preserved in their final moments.

  11. Via Villa dei Misteri, 2, Pompei
