An archaeologist leads this walk, and the park ticket is kept separate. A link for buying skip-the-line tickets online is sent the afternoon before the tour, and tickets can also be bought on the spot with the guide's help.

The route starts at Porta Marina with Vesuvius in view and heads for the political and social centre of Pompeii: the Basilica, the Forum with its market, and the main temples. It follows the Decumanus Maximus, goes into elegant private houses, shops and Roman taverns, and stops at the plaster casts of the victims. The Theatre and the Gladiators' Barracks come last.

The guides are professionals who have led this tour for years, with a background in archaeology and ancient architecture and art. Admission to the park costs 20 euro per adult and is free under 18.

  7. Tempio di Giove Capitolino

The temple dominates the northern side of the Forum, with Vesuvius rising behind it.
