Four hours is long for Pompeii, and this guided tour uses the time to read the city through its history and culture instead of racing past the highlights. The Villa dei Misteri, home of the famous Dionysian fresco, is part of the route.

The guide treats Pompeii as a Hellenistic city, neither Greek nor Roman: a large commercial and industrial centre with links to Asia Minor, India and Persia. The route takes in the Domus Pompeiana, a big house known for its frescoes and mosaics, the Dionysian and Isiac mystery cults, and the daily life of a town sometimes called the most alive of the dead cities. The eruption is read as ancient writers read it, as a divine punishment, with Sodom and Gomorrah as the comparison.

Guiding is in Italian. The entrance ticket to the ruins is bought separately.
